Inspectors of the National Agency for Control and Inspections of Belarus will visit Lithuanian military units

On May 27-28 inspectors of the National Agency for Control and Inspections will carry out a visit to a designated area in the units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

A team of military experts of Belarus will inspect the central part of the territory of Lithuania and training ranges of Gaižiūnai and Pabradė.

The inspection will also be carried out at the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf in Rukla, the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai and the headquarters of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Force in Vilnius.

The visit is organised in accordance with the Vienna Document 2011 of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). According to the document regulations each OSCE state party holds a right to verify if another state party does not undertake illicit military activities requiring prior notification, and does not maintain undeclared military capabilities.

The Vienna Document binds OSCE states to annually provide information about their armed forces, plans of developing defence capabilities and defence budget, and notify in advance about planned military activities. Parties to the agreement also commit to accept a set number of inspections from other countries in their territory per year.

This is going to be the first inspection carried out by foreign arms control experts in Lithuania on the basis of the OSCE Vienna Document this year.

Military personnel of the Arms Control Division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces discussed guidelines for further cooperation and endorsed a protocol of agreement on further bilateral cooperation in the area of arms control with their Belarussian counterparts this April in Vilnius.
