Minister of National Defence will attend informal EU Defence Ministers meeting in Athens

On February 20-21 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will take part in an informal European Union Defence Ministers meeting in Athens, Greece, where the Ministers will discuss EU-led operations and missions, share information on the situation on the ground in the Central African Republic (CAR) and address the readiness of the European Union for involvement in the CAR.

On January 28, 2014, the United Nations Security Council mandated an EU military operation in the Central African Republic which was launched subsequently on February 10 by a decision of the European Union with Major General Philippe Pontiès as Operation Commander and a headquarters based in Greece. The operation is planned to be up to 6 months long and to involve approximately 1 thousand-strong European force. Its mission is to ensure security and stability in Bangui, capital of the CAR, and the surrounding area. Eventually the EU will aim at transferring the operation to the African Union-led mission or a UN peacekeeping operation.

The Ministers will also dispute the course of the implementation of the European Council conclusions adopted in December 2013 regarding security and defence. The European Defence Ministers will address a systematic and long-term enhancement of defence cooperation and joint projects. Lithuanian Minister J.Olekas will focus on the themes of relevance to Lithuania: closer cooperation with the Eastern Partners, energy and cyber security, and promotion of NATO-EU relations.
