On February 16 leadership and members of the National Defence System took part in the commemorative events of Restoration of Lithuania's Independence Day.

 

In the morning of February 16 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius paid tribute to the signatories of the Act of Independence of Lithuania of February 16, 1918 in Rasų Cemetery.

On February 5 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with the recently appointed Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis at the Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force. The Ministers discussed joint projects of their countries, further development of the Baltic Air Surveillance Network BALTNET, Lithuanian-Latvian cooperation in the NATO Response Force (NRF) and the European Union Battle groups (EU BGs), as well as cooperation between the countries’ navies.

On January 31 Captain Andrius Raziūnas, officer of the Logistics Command, was formally welcomed home and decorated after a six-month tour of duty as movement and transportation operations officer with the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali) in Bamako at a ceremony at the Logistics Command of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Vilnius.

 

CPT A. Raziūnas’ excellent service was recognised by a badge o the National Defence System Medal for Deployment on International Missions which was presented to him by acting Commander of the Logistics Command Lieutenant Colonel Valdas Dambrauskas, and by a certificate of commendation presented by Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis.

On January 27 two members of the Italian Air Force flew in at the Air Base in Šiauliai with two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter-jets and a Boeing KC-767A refuelling tanker. Till Thursday the Italian airmen will be training in the Baltic airspace in advance of NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltic States which Italy is to take over for the first time in January 2015.

 

Italian troops with 4 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter-jets whose tour of duty at the Šiauliai Ari Base will run for 4 months starting with January 2015 have arrived to familiarise with climatic conditions in Lithuania and the NATO mission. The latter was represented to the Italian military by Colonel Lieutenant Vidmantas Raklevičius, commander of the Air Base, and U.S. military servicemembers who are in charge of the mission at the moment.

On January 23–24 Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis took part in the informal meeting of the EU Defence Policy Directors in Athens, Greece, which had taken over as the Presidency country of the Council of the European Union from Lithuania.

 

The meeting addressed the ways of implementing the European Council Conclusions of December 2013 regarding the enhancement of European defence.

U.S. F-15C Eagle fighter-jet made emergency landing

On January 24 a U.S. F-15C Eagle fighter-jet deployed on NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission had to make an emergency landing for technical causes at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai.

 

The aircraft has landed successfully without experiencing any incidents.

On January 23-24 Defence Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis will take part in an informal meeting of European Defence Policy Directors in Athens, Greece, where relevant points of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) will be addressed.

 

The European defence experts will be debating measures for implementing the December European Council conclusions concerning defence, that are aimed at ensuring the capacity to respond to the emerging security challenges, to enhance cooperation with other partner nations, etc.

Cooperation within NATO special operations forces discussed

On January 23 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces met with NATO Special Operations Forces (SOF) Commander Vice Admiral Sean A. Pybus conducting a visit in Lithuania with whom perspectives of the involvement of SOF in multinational operations, exercises and training events were discussed.

 

“First of all I would like to pay tribute to the United States of America for multiple assistance and support in achieving such a high level of training in the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces. We also highly appreciate the support from the NATO Special Operations Headquarters (NSHQ) that has contributed significantly to the success of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan. Today this priceless experience has immense value to us not only in sharing the burden and knowledge with NATO allies in operations and exercises but also builds on the defence capabilities of our home country and readiness of the Special Operations Forces for peacetime tasks”, Minister J.Olekas said.

On January 23 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed regional security and defence policy issues with members of the Defence Commission of the Parliament of Sweden (Riksdag).

 

The Lithuanian Minister expressed his delight about the close cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden. “Although not a NATO member, Sweden is still one of the closest partner nations in the region that has been supporting the Lithuanian Armed Forces since the re-establishment of Lithuania’s independence – it has helped updating the weaponry at the Lithuanian Armed Forces and provided a steadfast backup for our membership in NATO,” J.Olekas said.
