Lithuania will commit logistic personnel to the NATO Response Force from the beginning of 2014, Lithuanian Navy to join in the second semester

A new contingent of Lithuanian military will begin the standby in the NATO Response Force (NRF) on January 1. Approximately 100 Lithuanian military will be committed next year to the high readiness NATO force capable of deploying wherever required worldwide on short notice and to complete a wide spectrum of operations.

 

The core of the new rotation will be formed by the personnel of the Vytenis General Support Logistic Battalion and the Logistics Command. The year-long standby will begin on January 1.

On January 3 air contingents conducting NATO’s Air Policing mission in the Baltic States will formally rotate at Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force. After a four-month tour of duty Belgium’s air contingent will hand over the mission to air personnel of the United States of America who will be carrying out the mission with four F-15 C Eagle fighter-jets. Prior to the changeover ceremony Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas will meet with General Frank Gorenc, Commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Commander Allied Air Command headquartered at Ramstein Air Base (Germany), conducting a visit in Lithuania for a discussion over the issues and matters related to the Baltic Air Policing mission.

On December 30 four F-15C Eagle fighter jets of the U.S Air Force will land at the Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force, the U.S. air personnel and assets will replace troops of Belgium’s Air Component that has been protecting Lithuania, Latvia’s and Estonia’s airspace with F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter-jets so far.

 

The United States of America will send troops to carry out the Baltic Policing mission for the fourth time and will replace Belgian military that have been in charge of the mission since September 1. The incoming rotation which will deploy from Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Lakenheath, United Kingdom, its home base, will be over 150-strong including such specialists as pilots, engineers, medical personnel, support groups, communications personnel, etc.

„Conclusions of the European Council have reflected the fundamental consent that European countries should exercise greater responsibilities in enhancing European security and defence,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said while commenting on the conclusions of the European Council on the future of the European Defence adopted on 20 December. “I hope that the opinion of the European leaders will also help promote awareness among our people that defence matters.”

On December 17 Lieutenant Colonel Devis Martusevičius (Lithuanian Air Force) was given the Best Student Award of the Higher Command Studies Course 2013 (HCSC 2013) for outstanding academic achievements, exceptional leadership and comradeship at a Graduation Ceremony in Tartu University History Museum. Commandant of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras presented the award to the Lithuanian officer for outstanding academic achievements, exceptional leadership and comradeship.

 

At the ceremony Lt Col D. Martusevičius and three other Lithuanian graduates of the HCSC 2013 were congratulated by Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička and Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Major General Almantas Leika on Lithuania’s behalf.

On December 14–16 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius carried out a visit in Afghanistan met with Lithuanian military deployed there, Commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA) General Sher Mohammad Karimi, and representatives of the leadership of NATO’s International Security Assistance (ISAF) operation.

On December 17 Director of the International Relations and Operations Department Žilvinas Tomkus (on behalf of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence) and Deputy Director of the International Relations and Euro-Atlantic Integration Department (on behalf of the Ministry of Defence of Georgia) Irakli Kochashvili signed a Bilateral Cooperation Plan 2014 in the framework of the Security Policy and Euro-Atlantic Integration Consultations.

 

The plan provides for inviting representatives of Georgia to attend the English Language Course and the Junior Staff Officer and Land Force Officer Course, to improve qualification in military medics and international NCO instructor courses.

On December 13 a renewed facilities for ammunition and armament demilitarization will be formally opened at the Arsenal of the Depot Storage Service in Linkaičiai (Radviliškio Distr.), the new facilities will be used for destroying dated and (or) waste ammunition of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

The formal ceremony is expected to be attended by Vice Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, Ambassador of the United States of America Deborah Ann McCarthy, Commander of the Logistics Command of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Colonel Sigitas Mundris, representatives of local municipality, and other guests.

On December 12 Ambassador of Belgium in Lithuania Peter Lescouhier paid a visit to the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai where he met with the Belgian Air Contingent currently deployed on NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The guest also met with Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Major General Edvardas Mažeikis and Commander of the Air Base Lieutenant Colonel Vidmantas Raklevičius.

On December 11 new Defence Attaché of Belarus in Lithuania Colonel Igor Tereshko will be accredited and his predecessor, Colonel Sergej Zezulin farewelled at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. Vice Minister of National Defence Marijus Velička will present to the outgoing Belarus’ officer the National Defence System of the Republic of Lithuania Medal of Merit.

 

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus in Lithuania Vladimir Drazhin and representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces are also expected to be in attendance at the event.
