Arms control inspectors of Lithuania will conduct visits to military units in Belarus and Russia

On September 11-13 two groups of the Arms Control Division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will carry out evaluation visits in the units of Belarusian and Russian Armed Forces (units of the Russian Federation which are located in Kaliningrad Oblast) simultaneously where the adequacy of the data provided in information exchanges and placement plans of weapon and equipment systems will be surveyed.

 

The evaluation visit will be conducted under the Vienna Document 2011 of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and bilateral agreements on confidence and security building measures signed by Lithuania, Belarus and the Russian Federation in 2001.

International seminar in Vilnius will address the impact of energy security on European defence sector

On 12–13 September Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania will hold an international seminar on energy security in Vilnius.

 

The seminar will include a debate on how the European Union’s (EU) member states and EU institutions could engage in a closer cooperation in order to be better prepared to respond to the challenges of global energy consumption in defence sector.

Lithuanian officer commences service in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan

This week one representative of the Lithuanian Armed Forces commenced service in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). He has been delegated for a one year duty period by request of the United Nations.

 

The Lithuanian military representative was appointed to serve in a Military Advisory Team (MAT) which is responsible for providing military assessment and advice to UNAMA and collaboration with provincial agencies of authority of Afghanistan provinces and that way contributes to strengthening security institutions.

Energy Security Centre of Excellence inaugurated in Vilnius

On 6 September NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence (NATO ENSEC COE) was inaugurated in Vilnius. The formal ceremony was conducted by President of the Republic of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces and other guests were also in attendance.

 

The NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence is based in the territory of the General Romualdas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy and headed by Colonel Romualdas Petkevičius, a delegate of Lithuania.

Defence Ministers of five EU member states discussed how to increase efficiency of the EU Battlegroups

On 5 September in Vilnius Defence Ministers of five countries that have contributed personnel to a currently on stand-by EU Battlegroup discussed how to use this EU rapid response capability in a more efficient way.

 

“As a multinational entity when addressing an emerging crisis a EU battle group represents the whole of the EU rather than individual interests of the EU battle group parties. For that reason together with my counterparts from the United Kingdom, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden we have discussed the common criteria that might be acceptable to all the member states in using this EU’s rapid response instrument for crisis management in a more flexible way,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said.

On 6 September Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with Defence Minister of Italy Mario Mauro. The Lithuanian Minister presented to his Italian counterpart Lithuania’s agenda of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and preparations for the European Council due at the end of the year. At the meeting at the National Art Gallery Lithuanian and Italian Defence Ministers also underlined that the progress achieved and results produced at the European Council on Defence will be available for evaluation as soon as the second semester of 2014 when Italy has assumed the rotating EU Presidency.

6 September, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom Philip Hammond, the meeting officials addressed successful cooperation of their represented countries in defence and security areas, the Lithuanian Minister presented to the guest the agenda of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union as well as the course of preparations for the upcoming European Council later this year.

On 5 September Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. At the meeting the Lithuanian Minister and the high-ranking EU official conducting her first-ever visit in Lithuania addressed the points of the informal EU Defence Ministers meeting due to place on 5-6 September in Vilnius, preparations for the European Council on Defence to be held at the end of the year, and security situation in Syria. J.Olekas briefed the High Representative on the key priorities and agenda of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
