On September 23 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas met with recently appointed Ambassador of Austria in Lithuania Dr. Johann Spitzer.

 

At the meeting Minister J.Olekas presented to the Ambassador the course and priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, i.e. enhancement of energy security and further development of the Eastern Partnership.

On September 20 a formal homecoming and decorations ceremony was held for the last shift of the Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province (PRT-17) in the square of the Ministry of National Defence in Vilnius.

 

“Today we greet you as well as we are proud of you for having completed this key mission in Afghanistan. You have transferred the responsibility for their own security to Afghan people as well as you have earned respect and great regard of local population and the entire NATO. You have turned us stronger. Also, security of our nation and all of us has been enhanced. You helped us prove that we are a strong and proud ally – unafraid of challenges and capable of standing up to them,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the formal ceremony for the troops who have completed the mission in the province of Ghor.

On September 17 Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis attended a meeting of the three Baltic States’ Defence Policy Directors in Tallinn, Estonia. The meeting focused on the enhancement of cooperation of the three Baltic States and the possibilities to expand it. The countries rendered their proposals on the projects that could be implemented in the Baltic Region.

 

The Policy Directors also discussed joint projects underway, their scope and importance in prospect. Major attention was also aid to the Baltic Air Policing mission, its principles of execution and future costs.

On September 20 a formal homecoming and decorations ceremony will be held for the last shift of the Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province (PRT-17) in the square of the Ministry of National Defence in Vilnius. This event will formally put an end to Lithuania’s first independent and the largest multinational mission that our country had been involved in for 8 years.

 

Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius, Minister of the Interior Dailis Barakauskas, Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, Members of Parliament, leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, commanders of Chaghcharan PRT rotations, representatives, ambassadors and defence attachés of the countries which had contributed to PRT mission, relatives of troops, and other guests.

On September 18 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas attended a session of the NATO Science and Technology Board (STB) that has just begun in Vilnius. The meeting was attended by representatives of NATO and partner states, such as Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Russia, etc. At the session Lithuanian Minister of National Defence J.Olekas highlighted that the meeting of NATO Science and Technology Board (STB) in Vilnius gives an opportunity to address the possibilities of strengthening this professional community and the role it assumes in providing solution to global challenges of the 21st century.

“It is always the most difficult and the most interesting to be the first ones,” said SSG Vidmantas Stramiela at a press conference at the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Vilnius, commenting on the European Union-led Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali) he has recently returned from. He and colleague SFC Giedrius Vaitukaitis last week retuned to Lithuania after having completed their assignments successfully. They were the first military that the Lithuanian Armed Forces had contributed to EUTM Mali to train the Malian Armed Forces in composition of the Nordic-Baltic Training Team from this April.

The first team of military instructors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces returned from the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali). Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Brigadier General Vilmantas Tamošaitis and Staff Sergeant Vidmantas Stramiela, a military instructor who has recently returned from EUTM Mali, will be giving a joint press conference on Tuesday.

Troops welcomed home after mission in Afghanistan

On September 16 a formal homecoming and decoration ceremony took place in Vilnius for the Lithuanian military who have just returned from the multinational mission in Afghanistan where they were serving as the Protection Team of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission and the teams providing training for helicopter pilots of the Afghan National Security Forces. Their successful completion of the mission was recognised by the National Defence System Medals for Deployment on International Missions and citations.

On September 11 and 12 the final rotation of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-17) returns from the multinational mission in Afghanistan in two portions. The troops will be transported to Šiauliai airport by US partners.

 

A formal homecoming ceremony of the PRT of Ghor province will be held in the square in front of the Ministry of National Defence on September 20 (a separate announcement will be released).
