Indirect fire delivered towards Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor

On May 30 at about 18.40 (local time) indirect fire was delivered towards Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor, where the 17th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor (PRT-17) is currently conducting service. Neither personnel of the PRT-17 nor the compound’s infrastructure have been harmed.

 

Two missiles were targeted towards the city of Chaghcharan, one of them exploded near the headquarters of the National Directorate of Security, the other one burst beyond the boundaries of Chaghcharan. Military personnel keeping watch at the PRT compound invoked all the necessary security measures and contacted local security and police officers who confirmed that an indirect fire had been delivered.

On May 30 approximately 150 peacekeepers who have returned after deployment to the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan lined up in the Cathedral Square at in formal homecoming ceremony.

 

The next-to-last rotation was formed predominantly by regular and voluntary personnel of the 8th Territorial Unit of the Didžioji Kova Military District of the National Defence Volunteer Force. The PRT-16 staff also included members from the Military Medical Service, Logistics Command, Mechanised Infantry Brigade "Iron Wolf”, Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion, Headquarters of the Lithuanian Land Force, and other units.

Military personnel of the Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD) that Lithuania will deploy on the EU Naval Force Somalia - Operation ATALANTA (EU NAVFOR - ATALANTA), the European Union counter-piracy and armed robbery operation off the coast of Somalia, completed their training on May 30 and are expected to deploy into the operation area by the end of July. Lithuania’s participation in the EU NAVFOR - Operation ATALANTA will be the largest contribution of our country to a European Union-led military mission and the first naval operation Lithuanian military have been involved in so far.

From May 29 to 30 Political Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr. Vaidotas Urbelis will be attending a meeting of the Baltic Defence Policy Directors in Parnu, Estonia.

 

The meeting will address the progress made in the implementation of tasks set forth by the Ministerial Committee (formed by the Defence Ministers of the three Baltic States), the Annual Activity Plan 2014 of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL), and the perspectives of further development of the Higher Command Study Course delivered at the BALTDEFCOL in cooperation with the Nordic countries.

May 29, Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas presented to Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces of Ireland Lieutenant General Seán McCann the main themes of the Common Security and Defence Policy that Lithuania will prioritise during its term of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union due to begin in July. The Minister stated that Lithuania would seek closer relations between NATO and the EU, a more efficient employment of the EU Battlegroups, and more attention to the energy security area and the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries.

NATO air capabilities train in the Baltic skies

On May 29 and 30 Headquarters Allied Air Command Ramstein (Germany) conducts the 15th Baltic Region Training Event (BRTE) in the skies of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. This BRTE focuses on the operational control capability of NATO’s member states.

 

BRTE XV will involve the Joint Control and Reporting Centre (RCR) in Karmėlava, “Mirage” F1 CR fighter-jets of the French Air Force deployed on the Baltic Air Policing mission, L-39 “Albatros” light ground support fighter and Robinson helicopter of the Estonian Air Force and Mi-17 helicopter of the Latvian Air Force.

On May 28 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas and Minister of Defence of Estonia Urmas Reinsalu discussed points of bilateral and international cooperation and joint projects of the Baltic States that have been underway for many years already.

 

Both Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the successful cooperation and agreed that further enhancement was necessary in the area.

On May 27 a certification exercise of the personnel of the Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD) that Lithuania will deploy on the EU Naval Force Somalia - Operation ATALANTA (EU NAVFOR - ATALANTA), the European Union counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia, began in Klaipėda. It is the final phase of combat training which will finalise the Lithuanian troops’ preparation for the mission. The exercise which will be running till May 29 will test the troops’ readiness to complete vessel and crew protection tasks.

Approx. 120 members of the Lithuanian Armed Forces assigned to a joint military unit with counterparts from the United Kingdom, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden have been certified for the European Union Battlegroup (EUBG) commitment in the second half of 2013 upon completion of the certification exercise on 16 May. If necessary, the EUBG led by the UK will be ready to deploy to complete tasks ranging from conflict prevention to humanitarian and disaster relief within 5 to 10 days.

On May 15 the Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas in the Ministry of National Defence met the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Actions Service Maciej Popowsky, and expressed expectations that conclusions of the European Council meeting, to be held in December, will reflect national priorities of Lithuanian Presidency.
