On March 29 Lithuania commemorates the 9th anniversary of its NATO membership. On the occasion Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas commented on the importance of the membership and challenges related to it, and highlighted NATO’s role as a security guarantee as well as the significance of collective commitments of NATO member states.

 

“We chose an absolutely right path 9 years ago. The key purpose of NATO is to use all the political and military means for protecting peace and security of its member states. The Alliance is the fundamental guarantee of our country’s security as well as of deterrence of possible enemies”, Minister Olekas said.

On March 27 top management of the Ministry of National Defence and leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, media representatives and other guests observed the evaluation exercise of the 17th rotation of the military contingent of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) of Ghor province, Afghanistan, currently in progress in the Kazlų Rūdos Training Area.

On March 27 an extraordinary event was organised at the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai for the first time – a run on the runway normally used for take-offs and landings of aircraft.

 

The event organised to mark the 9th anniversary of the NATO membership of Lithuania was attended by representatives of divisions of the Lithuanian Air Force, the 6th Territorial Unit of the Prisikėlimo Military District of the National Defence Volunteer Force, the Lithuanian Military Academy, Embassy of France in Lithuania, and a numerous flock of members of the Danish Royal Air Force deployed on the Baltic Air Policing mission in Lithuania. The “RUNWAY RUN 2013” event integrated them into one team reflecting the spirit of NATO – all as one towards a common goal.

Change of command and rotation of contingents at the Regional Command West

On March 24 a change of command ceremony took place and contingents rotated in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Regional Command West (RC-West) based in Herat, Afghanistan. After six months on duty in RC-West the Italian Alpine Brigade Taurinense were replaced by the Julia Alpine Brigade of Udine (Italy). Likewise, after a half-year service Italian Brigadier General Dario Ranieri handed over the duties to the new Commander RC-West Brigadier General Ignazio Gamba. The Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor is subordinate to the Regional Command West.

Defence Minister and Ambassador of Armenia discussed bilateral cooperation

On March 26 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas discussed bilateral defence cooperation and contribution to multinational operations in a meeting with Ambassador of Armenia HE Ara Aivazian.

 

At the meeting Minister Olekas expressed his delight over the bilateral dialogue of Armenia and Lithuania in defence sector. In his turn, Ambassador Aivazian thanked Lithuania for the manifold support in military training. Minister Olekas also presented to the Ambassador Lithuania’s priorities for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union – energy security and Easter Partnership (EaP).

Lithuanian military instructors arrived in Mali to join the EU Training Mission

On March 24 two military instructors of the Lithuanian Armed Forces arrived in Mali with their colleagues from Finland and Sweden to take part in the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali). They will serve in the Finnish-led Nordic-Baltic training team which will provide training for the armed forces in Mali.

 

This is going to be Lithuania’s first contribution to a military mission in the continent of Africa as well as the first joint deployment with Nordic military personnel.

On March 25 a five-day tactical field exercise began in the Kazlų Rūdos Training Area to test readiness of the 17th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province (Afghanistan). This is the last PRT rotation that Lithuania will deploy to Ghor, it will hand over the responsibility for security in the province to the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

On March 18-22 military personnel of King Mindaugas Motorised Infantry Battalion assigned to the European Union Battlegroup (EUBG) attend attending evaluation exercise in Pabradė Training Area

 

In the second semester of 2013 from July 1 approximately 120 members of King Mindaugas Battalion will conduct standby in a high-readiness unit of the EU – the EU Battlegroup formed together with military personnel of the UK, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden. Lithuania will also post staff officers to the headquarters of the UK-led EU BG, and Colonel Vaidotas Malinionis (Lithuanian Armed Forces) will serve as deputy chief of the joint headquarters.

While participating in the Meeting of the Policy Director of the EU Defence Ministries in Brussels on March 20, Policy Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis emphasized that a stronger role of the European Union as international security provider requires greater attention to developing crisis response capabilities, such as the European Union Battlegroups (EU BGs).

Preparations for Host Nation Support Exercise Baltic Host underway

On March 19 through 21 the main Concept Development Conference for the Host Nation Support (HNS) Exercise Baltic Host of the three Baltic States took place in Võru, Estonia. The objective of the conference was to concert the Exercise Plan to be used in the exercise this autumn among the Baltic States and participating countries and to address the most current points of preparation for the exercise.

 

The exercise which will take place in November will test and refine the procedures of rendering HNS to the allied forces deployed in the Baltic region. Furthermore, information exchange procedures will be improved through coordination of all the institutions rendering HNS.
