Minister of National Defence decorated Special Operations troops of Latvia and Lithuania

On January 30 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas presented medals for participation in the NATO-led multinational operation to members of the joint Lithuanian-Latvian Special Operations Forces (SOF) Squadron after their redeployment from the mission in Afghanistan.

 

“The job done by the SOF Squadron received really high evaluation from the allies and the command of the NATO operation in Afghanistan. You have proved by your corporate achievements that you are brothers in arms capable of completing every task entrusted to you,” Minister of Defence J.Olekas said emphasizing the significance of cooperation between the Lithuanian and Latvian SOF.

On January 24 and 25 Political Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis attended the EU Political Directors’ meeting in Dublin, Ireland, where the officials of the EU countries’ Defence Ministries addressed security situation in Mali, operations and partnerships implemented by the European Union, and the points of the EU military capability development.

 

At the meeting a considerable attention was paid to the preparation for the meeting of the European Council on defence issues to take place late this year. V. Urbelis represented proposals of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for the discussion. According to P V. Urbelis, it was particularly important to conduct an in-depth discussion of the European Council’s agenda at the EU Defence Ministers meeting to take place in Vilnius. V. Urbelis also maintained that the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania was prepared to arrange a seminar on the topic during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union thus contributing to the run-up to the European Council.

On December 22 military personnel of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team conducted a joint patrol with military personnel of the Afghan National Army reaching as far as the village of Bedan in the district of Shahrak lying approximately 100 km away from Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province.

 

 

 

Peacekeepers conducting the patrol met with the senior and other local representatives of Bedan village, inhabitation over 1000, they also visited boys’ school of the village and met with the school’s principal and one of the teachers.

Lithuanian military will deliver logistic support to NATO forces in Kosovo

On December 25 the first of the four Lithuanian troops to be deployed to the NATO Movement Control Operation in Kosovo was delegated to the Kosovo Force (KFOR). Lithuanian military will serve in the Multinational Integrated Logistics Unit (MILU) with their colleagues from Bulgaria, the Check Republic, and Croatia. The key tasks entrusted to the Lithuanian logistics specialists will be closely related to the operations of NATO forces’ movement control.

 

During the operation Lithuanian troops will be responsible for ensuring uninterrupted movement of NATO forces: they will plan transportation of personnel and cargo, support the control of personnel trips by land or air, act as mediators in implementing border crossing procedures, etc.

Lithuanian Air Force personnel prepare for duty in the NATO Response Force

On December 21 troops of the Lithuanian Air Force assigned to complete duty in the NATO Response Force (NRF) attended an exercise in the Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force.

 

Approximately 30 servicemembers of the Air Base and the Air Defence Battalion forming an NRF Airport Maintenance Unit familiarised with various tactical technical characteristics and special loading requirements military of commercial and passenger aircraft and freighters. In the practical part of the exercise troops trained to prepare for transportation of ordinary and hazardous cargoes and vehicles, to deliver passenger services and aircraft guidance, familiarised with the operation of special loading equipment, loading and unloading procedures.

On December 18 Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius paid a visit to the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team's compound as part of his trip to Afghanistan. In Ghor he met with Sayed Anwar Rahmati, Governor of the province.


At the meeting with Governor of Ghor Lithuanian Chief of Defence discussed security situation in the region, the current achievements and the future of Ghor after 2013. Mr Sayed Anwar Rahmati thanked for Lithuania's contribution to the reconstruction of Ghor province. He emphasised that the success of the partner-completed development cooperation projects depended heavily on the work of the PRT. Governor also thanked partner states of the Lithuanian-headed PRT, Japan and the U.S.A., for their active contribution to the provincial reconstruction process.

Delegation from Ukraine conducted a study visit

From December 16 to 19 a group of representatives of Ukrainian non-governmental organisations and media outlets from Odessa, Sumy, Lutsk, and other regions of the country were conducting a study visit on the at the Ministry of National Defence and divisions of the Lithuanian Armed Forces taking interest in NATO and international security-related topics.

 

During the visit the Ukrainian guests met with representatives of the Ministry of National Defence, the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy, the Eastern Europe Studies Centre, the Lithuanian Atlantic Treaty Association), and conducted a trip to the Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force. The guests from Ukraine also met with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chief of Defence visits Lithuanian peacekeepers in Afghanistan

Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius began a visit in Afghanistan on December 17. General will meet with the Lithuanian peacekeepers deployed on the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan, representatives of NATO’s operational headquarters in Afghanistan, and representatives of local administration and security forces.

 

On the first day of the visit Chief of Defence of Lithuania met with Deputy Commander of the ISAF Joint Command in Afghanistan Major General Javier Cabeza Taberné, leadership of the ISAF Special Operations Forces and discussed the preparation for the withdrawal of forces in the end of 2013.

Lithuanian officer will lead the Baltic Defence College

On December 19 a change of command ceremony will take place at the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) in Tartu (Estonia). Brigadier General Meeli Kiili (Estonian Army) will be replaced by Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras. The change of command ceremony will also be attended by Major General Almantas Leika, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, and Colonel Eugenijus Vosylius, Commandant of the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy.

 

Before the current posting Maj Gen Vitalijus Vaikšnoras worked as the Advisor to the Ministry of National Defence. Prior to that he was the Military Representative of Lithuania to NATO and the European Union, in 2010-2011 he worked as the Dean of the NATO Military Committee. Maj Gen V. Vaikšnoras also ran the Defence Staff of the Ministry of National Defence and he was the Deputy Commander-Chief of Staff of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade "Iron Wolf", and occupied other positions of command.

On December 12 Chief Advisor for Cyber Security of the Ministry of National Defence Vytautas Butrimas delivered an announcement on the topic of cyber security in the Baltic Cyber Security Experts Conference in Tallinn via a video link.

 

The event was organised by the Information Systems Centre of Estonia based in Tallinn which also performs the function of the National Computer Incident Response Capability.
