Defence Ministers of Lithuania and Latvia will discuss defence of the Baltic States in the interwar period and today

September 7, Defence Minister of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė and Defence Minister of Latvia Artis Pabriks will discuss defence of the Baltic States in the interwar period and today in Vytautas Magnus University.

 

In a discussion “22 Years of Independence of the Baltic States in the Interwar Period and Today. Lessons Learned.” Ministers will compare security situation, security assurance, threats, readiness of the national armies, political will, and other issues, in the interwar period and today.

On September 6 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė received Ambassador of Ukraine in Lithuania HE Valery Zhovtenko. The meeting officials discussed bilateral relations.

 

Minister emphasised the importance of Ukraine for the security of Europe and the inevitable necessity for the people and officials of Ukraine to do their homework in various areas on their way to the Euro-Atlantic integration.

On September 5-6 Vice Minister of National Defence for Resources, Finance, Procurement and Infrastructure Mykolas Juozapavičius is visiting Brussels where he implements a busy schedule of meetings with Chairmen of NATO Budget, Investment, and Resource Policy and Planning Committees, and Director of NATO Office of Resources.

 

On September 6 Vice Minister of National Defence will sign an agreement with General Manager of the NATO Communications and Information Agency Koen Gijsbers regarding the Air Command and Control System Voice Communication System procured collectively by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The Baltic countries agreed to authorise Lithuania to sign the agreement on behalf of the three Baltic States with the NATO Communications and Information Agency.

September 4, Political Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis and Capability and Armament Director General Col Valdas Šiaučiulis met with Rear Admiral Mark C. Montgomery, Deputy Director (DJ5) Plans, Policy and Strategy United States European Command (EUCOM), and his delegation on visit in Lithuania.

 

At the meeting actual steps to be taken to strengthen cooperation between Lithuania and the United States of America in defence planning, joint exercises, and other areas, were discussed.

On September 5 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė presented the National Defence System Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service to U.S. Ambassador HE Anne E. Derse whose term in office has come to an end.

Minister of National Defence thanked U.S. Ambassador for close defence cooperation.

 

“During all these years it was crucial to know that the United States – Lithuania’s strategic partner in defence sector, the people of the U.S.A., and you - always available to consult with and to exchange opinions with on important security and defence points, were there for us,” R.Juknevičienė said.

Air Force Command and Staff Officer Course opened

International Air Force Command and Staff Officer Course (AFCSC) began at the Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy on September 4, the AFCSC will proceed till December 21, 2012. The main objective of the course is to train analytical and planning skills of the military air force officers of the three Baltic States in completing component-level military air operations.

 

International Air Force Command and Staff Course for the three Baltic Forces have been conducted at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania since 2004. 100 Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian air force officers successfully completed the course successfully during the period. This year the 16-week duration AFCSC will be attended by 15 representatives from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Over 1.5 ton of opiates destroyed in Ghor

On September 2 over 1600 kg of narcotic materials were burnt in Ghor where a Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team is in charge of security.

 

The destruction ceremony was observed by Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics of Afghanistan Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, Governor of Ghor Syed Anwar Rahmati, PRT-15 Commander Col Artūras Radvilas, Senior National Representative of Ukraine in Afghanistan Col Yuriy Thoruk, members of various organisations, and representatives of Afghan National Security Forces and local media.

On August 31 rotation ceremony of the air contingents deployed on the Baltic Air Policing mission conducted from the Lithuanian Air Force Air Base in Šiauliai – the Polish Air Contingent which has been guarding the Baltic skies for four months will be replaced by four Jas-39C “Gripen” fighters of the Czech Air Force.  

 

The changeover ceremony will be attended by Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronis Ažubalis, Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic Alexandr Vondra, Operational Commander of Polish Armed Forces Lt Gen Edward Gruszka, and representatives of the embassies of the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, U.S.A., Hungary, and Sweden, and the city and district of Šiauliai.
