National Armaments Director of Italy visited Ministry of National Defence


On September 27 Director of National Armaments Directorate of Italy Lt Gen d Claudio Debertolis paid a visit to the Ministry of National Defence. The high guest arrived to familiarise with the Ministry of National defence and the Armed Forces of Lithuania, to discuss the perspectives of actual projects of bilateral cooperation, to familiarise with the present armament programs, and the procurement projects underway.


The guest was received by Vice Minister of National Defence for Resources, Finance, Procurement and Infrastructure Mykolas Juozapavičius and Director General for Capabilities and Armaments of the Ministry of National Defence Col Valdas Šiaučiulis.


At the meeting with Vice Minister M. Juozapavičius and Lt Gen d Claudio Debertolis focused on concrete projects – the exploitation of the “C-27J Spartan” transport aircraft of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the possibility of further developing cooperation in military training.


Vice Minister M. Juozapavičius also thanked the Italian representatives for the scheduled deployment of the Italian military personnel to the NATO exercise “Steadfast Jazz 2013” due to be held in the Baltic States the following year as well as the decision to deploy on the Baltic Air Policing mission from 2015.


The Italian side proposed to consider the possibility of signing a Technical Memorandum of Understanding (TMU) which would step up the opportunities of joint armament procurement.


Bilateral contacts regarding weaponry issues were also addressed, experience of military equipment procurement and modernisation shared, and information on the employment of advanced technologies in the armed forces exchanged.

“I believe this visit will expand the opportunities of enhancing bilateral defence cooperation,” said Director General for Capabilities and Armaments of the Ministry of National Defence Col Valdas Šiaučiulis.


During the two day visit in Lithuania Lt Gen C. Debertolis also made a trip to the Energy Security Centre operating in the premises of the Gen Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy where the guest familiarised with the activity of the centre, the aspiration to receive NATO accreditation as the Centre of Excellence and action plan for 2013.
