Start of the multinational exercise „Maple Arch 2012”

September 16, multinational exercise ‘Maple Arch 2012” have been started by solemn opening ceremony in Pabradė Training Area. The opening ceremony was attended by the commander of the Mechanized Infantry Brigade "Iron Wolf" Colonel Valdemaras Rupšys, the exercise participants were blessed by the Chief Chaplain of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Lieutenant Colonel Rimas Venckus.

On July 31 Lithuanian Defence Minister Rasa Juknevičienė and Czech Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra held a bilateral meeting after a formal changeover ceremony of air contingents conducting the Baltic Air Policing mission in Šiauliai during which Air Contingent of the Czech Republic took over the responsibility for patrolling the Baltic skies from Polish troops. At the meeting security situation in the region, NATO Air Policing mission, and new forms of cooperation in defence area were addressed.

On August 27 a formal ceremony was held to farewell the military personnel of the Pennsylvania National Guard of the United States of America being redeployed after the completion of service in the Police Mentoring Team (PMT) which provides training and mentoring to local police forces of Ghor province. The ceremony took place at the compound of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor. A U.S. soldier who has been serving with the National Support Element was also farewelled by the same parade.

Czech air assets will patrol Baltic airspace

On August 30 four JAS-39 “Gripen” fighters of the Czech Air Force will land at the Lithuanian Air Force’s Air Base in Šiauliai to replace Polish troops and MiG-29 fighter-jets that have been patrolling the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in the framework of the NATO Air Policing mission.

 

The contingents will changeover during a formal ceremony on August 31.

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė held a video conference with the media representatives and experts of Ukraine on Tuesday to discuss the role of women in politics, armed forces, and to represent the benefit of NATO membership to the national defence of Lithuania.

 

Minister underlined that nearly 11% of personnel in the National Defence System are women which is significantly more than in, for example, Denmark, where women constitute approximately 6% of the national armed forces’ personnel.

Energy security exercise will be held

On August 27 the second phase of the evaluation exercise of the 16th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team on pre-deployment training will be held at the General Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre. On August 31 it will be finalised by an energy security exercise ENERGEX 2012 organised in cooperation by the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Energy Security Centre.

 

ENERGEX 2012 will test the readiness of the PRT-16 staff and elements to complete the tasks of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan and their abilities to ensure completion of an operation in case energy supply from traditional sources was interrupted. The exercise is also to demonstrate that innovative solutions could help prevent the interruptions of energy supply from traditional sources and the damage caused by such interruptions.

Ship of the Lithuanian Navy will take part in multinational oil response exercise

On August 26 search and rescues and counter-pollution ship "Šakiai" of the Lithuanian Navy sailed for Sweden to take part in the multinational oil response exercise on August 28-30 BALEX DELTA 2012 in the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea.

 

The annual HELCOM (Helsinki Commission) initiated exercise is year organised by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Sweden offered Lithuania to join the European Union Nordic Battlegroup

Sweden has sent a formal invitation for Lithuania to join the Sweden-led EU Nordic Battlegroup in the first half of 2015. Ambassador of Sweden in Lithuania HE Cecilia Ruthström-Ruin has delivered the invitation on August 24 to Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas presented in the letter by Defence Minister of Sweden Karin Enström to Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė.

 

“This project is of utmost importance to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, it will allow Lithuania to contribute to one of the framework EU operational capabilities,” Vice Minister of National Defence said.

The topic of airspace surveillance and control under a heated discussion in the Lithuanian society recently deserves an official presentation of the role of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the protection of the Lithuanian skies.

 

Protection of the airspace of Lithuania means observation, control, and defence. These are the components of the mission of the Lithuanian Air Force's units – the Airspace Surveillance and Control Command and the Air Defence Battalion equipped with anti-aircraft missile systems “Stinger” and RBS 70.

Chief of General Staff of Poland will pay a visit to Lithuania

On August 24 Chief of General Staff of Poland (Chief of Staff) Gen Miechysław Cieniuch will pay a visit to the Air Base of Lithuanian Air Force (LITHAF) in Šiauliai. The high guest will meet with Chief of Staff of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Maj Gen Edvardas Mažeikis, Political Director of the Ministry of National Defence Dr Vaidotas Urbelis, and other representatives of the Ministry and the Armed Forces.

 

Short bilateral meetings which will focus on defence and security affairs are scheduled in the framework of the visit.
