New Governor of Ghowr posted, his predecessor Dr A. Heivad farewelled

On August 27 delegation of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-15) of Ghowr, province of Afghanistan, attended the first meeting with the newly assigned Governor of Ghowr Syed Anwar Rahmati who replaced the former Governor Dr. Abdullah Heivad in the position.

 

PRT-15 Commander Col Artūras Radvilas introduced civilian and military components of PRT-15, command of the European Union Police Mission in Chaghcharan, Military Advisory and Police Mentoring Teams, the essential guidelines of the activity, and projects underway to the new head of Ghowr.

From July 28 to 30 military personnel of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-15), officers of the Police Advisory Team (PAT-1), and members of the Afghan National Police conducted a patrol to the Lal Wa Sare Jangal district of Ghowr. The district located in the eastern part of Ghowr is the next biggest district after Chaghcharan with a population of over 100 thousand.

 

The patrol was organised to expand the influence of the central government and security forces in the district, to visit the sites of former projects, to estimate the condition of HW2 road usability and the possibility to restore it, possibilities for PRT and partners to undertake other development projects, estimate the security situation, meet with the representatives of local administration, discuss governance and development cooperation points relevant to the population of the district, and deliver assistance.

NATO's North Atlantic Council approved financing of the constructions of an aviation fuel storage at the Lithuanian Air Force's Air Base in Šiauliai under the NATO Security Investment Programme.

 

On July 27 in Brussels Deputy NATO Secretary General Alexander Vershbow signed the document which reopened the way for the NATO-funded projects, previously suspended because of the NATO’s austerity policy in the economic crisis period.

On July 27 the first crop of the Basic Military Volunteer Skills Course (BMVSC) took an oath to the Republic of Lithuania at the Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla (Jonavos Distr.).

 

The oath of allegiance ceremony was attended by Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command Col Gintaras Ažubalis, acting Commander of the Training Regiment Lt Col Viktoras Liepinš, former Vice Minister of National Defence Edmundas Simonaitis, commanders and sergeant majors of the territorial units of the National Defence Volunteer Force, families of the volunteers, and other guests.

New Defence Attaché of Sweden accredited to Lithuania

On July 25 the outgoing Defence Attaché of the Kingdom of Sweden Lt Col Kristian Bouveng was farewelled and the incoming Defence Attaché Lt Col Tapani Aslak Mattus accredited at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of Vice Minister of National Mykolas Juozapavičius and the IInd Secretary of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden Pascal Ingemar Restel.

 

Lt Col K. Bouveng was accredited on June 2008 with a residence in Vilnius. Upon the farewell he was presented with a National Defence System Medal of Merit for personal contribution to the enhancement of Lithuanian and Swedish defence cooperation.

First Basic Military Volunteer Skills Course organised at the Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment

From July 7 to 27 Basic Military Volunteer Skills Course (BMVSC) took place for the first time at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla (Jonava Distr.). It has trained over a hundred of future National Defence Volunteer Force (NDVF) members.

 

On July 24 NDVF Chief of Staff Lt Col Ramūnas Baronas, acting Commander of the National Defence Volunteer Force, visited the trainees. He met with the volunteers, congratulated them upon having surmounted a part of the course successfully, and wished luck in finishing it to be sworn in for the State of Lithuania on July 27. “The oath is more than an immense honour, it is also a responsibility the soldier will have to fulfil throughout his or her duty period. I am happy to see a big crowd of future volunteer troops, this first course is just the beginning of your service, many more exercises and qualification courses are ahead of you. I anticipate meeting you in the training areas many times in the future,” said Col. R. Baronas to the young volunteers.

On July 17-18 the Supreme Allied Commander Europe Admiral James G. Stavridis with the official visit came to Lithuania. On 17 July the guest visited the Ministry of National Defence, where he met the Lithuanian Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Arvydas Pocius, also visited NATO Energy Security Center, located in the Lithuanian Military Academy.

The Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičiene on Wednesday, July 18.and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe Admiral James Stavridis discussed NATO's collective defence and security guarantee and Lithuanian and the U.S. military cooperation issues. The Minister emphasized personal contribution of Admiral J. G. Stavridis to the circumstance that Lithuania's membership in NATO has become more practical, and that the Baltic region started to conduct exercises planned under realistic scenarios.

On July 11 in Vilnius the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičiene met with the Head of Polish National Security Bureau Stanislaw Koziej and was pleased not only for successfully developed bilateral relations in the field of defence, but also the need to continue and strengthen regional projects, such as LITPOLUKRBRIG in order to develop mutually beneficial relationship with Ukraine.

On July 3 Defence Attaché of the Kingdom of Denmark Capt (N) Ulf Berthelsen was farewelled and a new Denmark’s Defence Attaché in Lithuania Col Søren Frausig was accredited at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. The ceremony was also attended by Vice Minister of National Defence for Defence Policy Vytautas Umbrasas and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark in Lithuania HE Jørgen Molde.

 

Capt (N) U. Berthelsen was accredited on March 31, 2008, and carried out his duties based in Vilnius. National Defence System Medal of Merit was bestowed on Capt (N) U. Berthelsen upon the farewell and for his personal contribution to the strengthening of the Lithuanian-Danish cooperation.
