New Afghan National Army compound inaugurated in Chaghcharan

On June 30 a new compound of the Afghan National Army was formally opened in Chaghcharan, capital of the province of Ghor. The opening ceremony of the Compound of martyred Ivaz, named after an Afghan soldier killed in battle, is the culmination of construction works that lasted for three months.

 

The opening ceremony was attended by Col Artūras Radvilas, Commander of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-15), Commander of the PRT Civilian Element Jurgis Stanaitis, Head of Chaghcharan Police Col Delawarshah Delawar, Head of the Operations Coordination Center - Provincial (OCC-P) Brig Gen Asadulah Ulumiar, ANA leadership of Ghor, military personnel of the Mentoring Team (MT-1), troops and media representatives.

Baltic States put to test Host Nation Support capabilities for the fourth time

On June 28 multinational Host Nation Support (HNS) Exercise “Baltic Host 12” will take off simultaneously in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The intent of this Exercise equally important to all the three Baltic States is to enhance compatibility of military and civilian institutions of the Baltic States and other NATO members, to foster and improve cooperation while completing HNS operations, and to set directions for the development of the participating countries’ infrastructure and institutions via strengthening security and defence capabilities.

 

The Exercise also involves military personnel from Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States European Command and the Naval Striking and Support Force Command along with the military and civilians from the Baltic States.

On June 26 and 27 Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis met with Director of International Security Policy of the United Kingdom Steve McCarthy. In the meeting the officials discussed the opportunities to step up bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and the UK as well as reconciled the common positions regarding the points of the NATO and the EU agendas.

 

“Today we have a solid background for strengthening the cooperation of both countries both on a bilateral basis and via contribution to NATO and the EU activities. The objective we seek is an increased role of the United Kingdom in the region”, phrased his estimation of the significance and perspectives of both countries’ mutual relations V. Urbelis.

On June 26–27 Policy Director of the Ministry of National Defence Vaidotas Urbelis will take part in a meeting of Defence Policy Directors of the Nordic Countries’ Group in London, UK. During the visit in the United Kingdom V. Urbelis will also meet with Director of International Security Policy Steve McCarthy with whom bilateral defence cooperation between Lithuania and the United Kingdom is expected to be discussed.

 

Defence Policy Directors of the Nordic Countries’ Group will address the outcomes of the NATO Chicago Summit, NATO’s role in Afghanistan, the possibilities of enhancing energy security through “green” projects in the armed forces, and the perspectives of multinational cooperation aimed at enhancing armed capabilities of the countries. Future plans of the Nordic Countries’ Group will also one of the focus points on the meeting’s schedule.be

On June Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas will attend the annual Georgia’s Defence and Security Conference in Batumi. In the second session of the Conference “Changing Security Environment: Trends and Concepts” Vice Minister of Defence will deliver an announcement on the financial aspects of security and defence – the impact of austerity on security and defence, possible solutions and resorts.  

 

 

The Conference which has already been held for several years is an excellent forum for discussing key security and defence aspects of Georgia as well as processes and progress of the Euro-Atlantic integration, and for estimating new challenges and situation and perspectives of security in the region.

On June 25, Monday, Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė met with President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan during the visit in Armenia. The meeting officials focused on regional security points.

 

President of Armenia looked back on the initial causes and progress of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as Armenia's efforts to resolve the conflict by peaceful measures. He pointed out the efforts of the international community and the role of the Minsk Group. "Only the impartial position of the international community can contribute to a peaceful resolution process," S. Sargsyan stressed.

On June 24, Sunday, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with Defence Minister of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan in Yerevan, Armenia, and signed an update of the bilateral cooperation agreement that has been the basis for Armenia’s officers’ training in Lithuania, information exchange, participation in military exercises, and exchange of lessons learned in multinational operations.

 

“Lithuania has always recognized the importance of the South Caucasus Region, relations with the countries in the region were developed in multiple directions, with trade and defence and security cooperation as priorities”, R.Juknevičienė upheld. According to Minister, our key objective is peace and security in the region. “During the visit we sought to convey our experience of obtaining NATO and the EU membership, and encourage Armenia’s cooperation with these organisations,” Minister stated. R.Juknevičienė stressed that Lithuania will continue focusing on the military training and education initiatives while developing bilateral cooperation.

On June 22, Friday, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will take part in the meeting of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command Gen William M. Fraser at the Lithuanian Government, the meeting officials will discuss the points of the transit via Lithuania from Afghanistan, security situation in the region, operation in Afghanistan, and others.

On June 22 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė attended the meeting of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee General Knud Bartels at the Lithuanian Government. Defence Minister thanked General for the superb cooperation between the Lithuanian and Danish Land Forces during General’s tenure as the Chief of Defence of Denmark.

 

When addressing the Baltic Air Policing mission Lithuanian Minister stressed the Baltic States’ intent to increase the Host Nation Support to annual 5 m Euros as of 2015.

On June 22 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė attended the meeting of Prime Minister Andrius and Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command Gen William M. Fraser where the possibility of conducting transit from Afghanistan via Lithuania, regional security, operation in Afghanistan, and other points were discussed.

 

“Even though NATO and ISAF transit is conducted by civilian companies, the Lithuanian Armed Forces is ready to render military infrastructure or Host Nation Support for cargo freightage,” Minister said.
