Azerbaijan Defence Minister is visiting Vilnius

September 17, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met Azerbaijan Defence Minister Colonel General Safar Abiyev who visited Lithuania on the official visit.

The meeting was focused on bilateral cooperation in the field of defence, issues of regional security and participation in multinational operations. Lithuanian and Azerbaijan defence ministers have renewed Defence Cooperation arrangement which was signed in 2002.

On May 29 formal homecoming ceremony for Lithuanian military contingent redeployed after the mission in Afghanistan took place in Panevėžys, Freedom Square.

 

“You have done an excellent job. At the NATO Summit in Chicago I returned from a week ago I saw that each of you have been Lithuania’s ambassadors in NATO. The contribution of each of you into the security of Afghanistan is a contribution to the security of Lithuania”, said Minister Rasa Juknevičienė in a welcome address.

Lithuania proposes two candidates for the United Nations Observer Mission in Syria

Lithuania proposed two candidates for delegation to the United Nations Observer Mission (UNOMIS) in Syria; both are to be approved by the UN. Once the candidates are confirmed, military personnel will be deployed into the mission area within 1-2 weeks. Lithuanian troops would serve in international military institutions and would not take part in the military operation directly, with regard to which a separate mandate by the Parliament of Lithuania is not required. The military would be delegated by the order of the Minister of National Defence.

 

The aim of UNSMIS is to observe the termination of armed hostilities caused by all the conflicting countries and the implementation of the so-called "six-point peace plan". With a year past after the onset of unrest and massacre still ongoing, on March 2012 the UN and the Arab League appointed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan Joint Special Envoy in Syria, UN Secretary General proposed to President of Syria Bashar al Assad the six-point peace plan. The Government of Syria agreed with the implementation of the regulations of the peace plan. The plan foresees a ceasefire between the Government of Syria and the insurgents, release of detainees, rendering assistance, and endorsement of the right to protest.

14th shift of peacekeepers rotated back from Afghanistan

On May 26 aircraft carrying servicemembers of the 14th rotation of the Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team landed in Šiauliai. Commander of the Šiauliai Air Base Lt Col Virginijus Steponavičius and Chaplain of the Air Force Maj Virginijus Veilentas welcomed the troops home.

 

Major part of the 14th shift of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-14) was formed by the 5th Territorial Unit of the Vytis Military District of the National Defence Volunteer Force. From mid-May they were preplaced in Ghor province by a new rotation of peacekeepers formed by the Lithuanian Grand Duchess Motorised Infantry Battalion.

“The documents endorsed at the Chicago Summit demonstrated that the character of Lithuania’s membership in NATO is becoming even more practical. From theory to practice, that is how this moment we have lived to see since joining NATO could be labeled”, commented Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė on Thursday in a press conference for summarization of the results achieved at the NATO Chicago Summit.

 

According to her, the importance of the US-European bond has been reiterated and the United States remain committed to Europe. Moreover, according to R. Juknevičienė, NATO is developing an increasingly realistic view of Russia. “In contrast to the naïve and idealistic trust which was observed in abundance just several years ago, today there appears a realistic and pragmatic perception of what is going on along the NATO’s borders”, Minister noted.

Military Attachés accredited to Lithuania on spring tour

May 24 through 26 tour of Military Attachés accredited to Lithuania will be take place with presentations of ministerial and military representatives on the newest developments in the national defence system with a focus on energy security on the programme.

 

On May 24 in a meeting at the Ministry of National Defence Military Attachés will meet with Chief of Defence LT Gen Arvydas Pocius, MOD and military representatives. A meeting with the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Energy Security Centre is also planned.

Graduation certificates awarded to high law enforcement officers of Ghor

On May 22 graduation ceremony for high officers of law enforcement institutions of Ghor was held in Chaghcharan, province of Ghor, certificates of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan ( EUPOL Afghanistan) were awarded for graduates of EUPOL courses.

 

The event was attended by Commander of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Col Artūras Radvilas, Head of Chaghcharan EUPOL Unit commissioner Artūras Kemežys, advisor of the superiority of law procurator Gediminas Bučiūnas, advisor to the criminal investigation unit of Ghor police commissioner Dmitrijus Kumašovas, Head of the PRT Civilian Element Jurgis Stanaitis and a delegation from the EUPOL headquarters in Kabul.

Lithuanian Military Academy represented to US Congress members’ advisors

On May 22 advisors of the US Congress Members paid a visit to the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. The guests listened to an introduction on the activities of the Academy and cooperation with the US higher military education institutions.

 

The Lithuanian Military Academy maintains relations with the Virginia Military Institute from 2001. The treaty of cooperation was renewed on 9 July 2009, on the basis of the agreement annually a IIIrd year cadet of the Academy spends a semester at the Virginia Military Institute and a cadet from the US institution studies for the period of time at the Lithuanian Military Academy. In 12 years of cooperation Lithuania delegated 12 cadets to the Virginia Military Institute from the Lithuanian Military Academy, and the USA likewise.

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and Chief of Defence Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius participate in the NATO Summit in Chicago which began on Sunday, the meeting will adopt decisions fundamental to Lithuania's security and the future of NATO.

 

"NATO Heads of State agreed to prolog the Baltic Air Policing mission with the base in Šiauliai. In a discussion the majority of state leaders expressed strong support to the extension of the project. It is important that the mission was labeled as an excellent example of Smart Defence, along with other instances, such as missile defence", Minister said. Besides that, Hungary and the Netherlands expressed intent to join the mission and Luxemburg offered to contribute financially.

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė stressed in a round-table discussion in Ottawa “NATO Priorities and Energy Security” with Canadian security and defence experts that energy security points are becoming increasingly important on the NATO agenda while consciousness regarding the area proliferates across the Alliance.
