On January 12 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and Chief of Defence Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius paid tribute to the victims of the January 13, 1991, events by taking part in a formal formation of the freedom defenders of 1990-1991 in the Seimas, later they attended the ceremonies of making a bonfire and laying flowers at the Television Tower, Lithuanian National Radio and Television Building, the memorial stone for the volunteer Artūras Sakalauskas.

 

On January 13 leadership of the Ministry of Nation Defence will attend a presentation of January 13 medals ceremony of at the Presidential Palace, a commemoration of the Freedom Fighters Day at the Seimas, and the mid-day flag-hoisting ceremony in the Independence Square. Later they and a 20-members honour guard will tribute the January 13 victims buried in the Antakalnis Cemetery. Freedom fighters buried in Alytus, Kaunas, Kėdainiai, Marijampolė and Rokiškis will be honoured at the same time. Commemorative events of the Freedom Fighters Day will be closed by a holy mass in the Vilnius Cathedral.

New Defence Attaché of Georgia accredited

On January 12 a new Defence Attaché of Col Georgia Zurab Tomauri will be accredited at the Ministry of National Defence.

 

At the ceremony Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas will present the Medal of Merit of the National Defence System to the outgoing Defence Attaché Lt Col Grigol Tatishvili for the personal input into the development of cooperation between the Georgian and Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

The incoming Defence Attaché Col Z. Tomauri is a graduate of the Military College of Strategic Missile System (Ukraine), the Military Artillery Academy, he also underwent studies in the United Kingdom. Before the diplomatic posting he served at the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces as chief of the Operational Readiness Division. Colonel also was Chief of Staff of the Artillery Battalion, Deputy of the Artillery Brigade Commander, and participated in a range of military training events that took place in Georgia and abroad as co-director of military exercise.

Reintegration of ex-combatants gain momentum in Ghor

In January over 20 former insurgents of the province of Ghor of Afghanistan handed over their weapons to the provincial administration.

 

Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Program was launched in February 2011 to assist insurgents to change their lives – withdraw from combat and integrate into society. The Program incapacitates the persons who refuse armed fight to acquire a profession or start their own trade. Last year 22 persons joined the reintegration program in Ghor from the Pasaband district, another 35 persons expressed a will to join the Program.

Ghor Police becomes responsible for security in Chaghcharan prison

January 10, Ministry of Justice of Afghanistan handed over the responsibility for the operation of the prison of Chaghcharan to the Ministry of the Interior of Afghanistan. After the change of subordination activity of the prison will be supervised by and in charge of the police forces of the province of Ghor which are trained with the assistance of the Lithuanian peacekeepers.

 

Top-ranking authorities of Ghor and representatives of the international community, military and civilian heads of Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT, representatives of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, officers of local police, Procurator’s Office and justice system attended the ceremony at the administrational quarters of the prison.

January 10, instructors of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-14) of the NATO International Security Assistance Force conducted mortar operation exercise and first medical aid course to members of the Afghan National Army (ANA).

 

The exercise was a part of a series of training provided by a Training Team operating within PRT. According to Lt Col Ričardas Stakelis, Lithuanian officer heading the Training Team, such courses are arranged and conducted with regard to individual skills of ANA members. “We give them the fundamental knowledge and skills they lack,” Lt Col R. Stakelis said.

On January 11, Wednesday, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with Ambassador of France in Lithuania HE Maryse Berniau and discussed security situation in the region, economical recession in the Euro Zone and defence financing matters, as well as other points.

 

“Lithuania rates defence cooperation with France high, we hope for a renewal of a bilateral cooperation treaty first signed in 1994”, Minister said at the meeting. She also thanked for the active part France has been taking in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission.

Lithuanian and Afghan troops jointly patrolled Ghor province

January 7, troops of Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor (PRT-14) and the Afghan National Army (ANA) conducted a joint patrol to the village of Cegey located 25 kilometers away from Chaghcharan. They installed a mobile control post halfway between Chaghcharan and Cegay and delivered humanitarian assistance to villagers.

 

In Cegay PRT and ANA personnel met with the senior of the village for a discussion over the security situation in the settlement. ANA troops told the villagers about the general security situation in Ghor, activities of ANA and the Afghan National Police, asked some questions about insurgent activities that might be undertaken in the village and surrounding territory. Later commander and personnel of the ANA Company distributed warm clothes and toys for local families.

On January 6, Friday, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė discussed points of regional security and prospects of the Baltic Air Policing mission in a meeting with Deputy Secretary of State William Burns at the US Department of Defence. Apart from that, the meeting defence authorities addressed the new list of US defence and security priorities announced by US President and Secretary of Defence several days ago that encompass a shift of focus on the Asian Pacific Region and modulations with regard to decreased defence financing.

 

“However, I was reassured at the meeting that USA remains committed to Europe and Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty entrenching collective defence of all the members of the Alliance. US and NATO presence in our region is crucial”, Minister said.

One more rotation of Lithuanian military deployed to Afghanistan

On January 6 deployment of the 7th shift of the Lithuanian National Support Element (NSE) to Afghanistan will take place in Marijampolė. The ceremony will be attended by Vice Minister of National Defence Mykolas Juozapavičius, acting Chief of Defence Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Maj Gen Edvardas Mažeikis, Director General

for Capabilities and Armaments of the Ministry of National Defence Brig Gen Almantas Leika, commanders of units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, representatives of the Municipality of Marijampolė and families of soldiers.

 

The new shift to assume responsibility for logistic provision of Lithuanian troops in Afghanistan will be led by Lt Col Petras Montvila, at the moment still the commander of the Vytenis General Support Logistic Battalion.

During her visit in Chicago (USA) on Thursday Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė attended a round-table discussion with members of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA), met with representatives of the Chicago’s Lithuanian Community, honored the tomb of Gen P.Plechavičius and memory of pilots S. Darius and S. Girėnas.

 

NATO is the key guarantee for Lithuania’s security

 

In a discussion with the CCGA representatives Lithuanian Minister statited that despite the essential changes NATO has undergone during the latter 20 years, the Alliance remains the vital guarantee for Lithuania’s security.
