Chief of Defence of Lithuania on the visit in Poland: “We share the vision of strengthening security in the region”

From January 26 to 28 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius was conducting a formal visit in Poland.

 

Meeting in Krakow Lithuanian CHOD and Gen Mieczysław Cieniuch, CHOD and Chief of General Staff of Poland, addressed current matters of bilateral cooperation: military collaboration in the context of the Baltic Region, NATO Air Policing mission over the Baltic States and Poland’s perspectives to continue participation in the mission, perspectives of collaboration between the Lithuanian and Polish Special Operations Forces, and the process of formation of the joint Lithuanian-Polish –Ukrainian Brigade LITPOLUKRBRIG. Chief of Defence of Poland invited the Lithuanian Armed Forces to assign special operations capabilities for the Joint Staff of the Special Forces Operational Component being formed in Poland.

 

“Cooperation with Poland, our strategic partner in military cooperation, is efficient as never before,” said Lt Gen A. Pocius. “We have a common vision regarding strengthening security in the region, we foresee a successful future for LITPOLUKRBRIG and great perspectives for participation of such capabilities as the Special Operations Forces in collective projects”.

On January 23 and 24 a delegation led by Commandant of the Latvian Military Academy Lt Col Egils Leščinskis paid a visit to the Gen Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. The guests met with Commandant of the Lithuanian Military Academy Col Gintaras Bagdonas and leadership of the Academy. Lt Col Egils Leščinskis is also the Head of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Latvian Armed Forces, therefore he met with Head of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Col Gintaras Ažubalis.

 

Representative of Latvia not only familiarized with the courses organised at the Lithuanian Military Academy and characteristics of officer training in Lithuania but also introduced the activity and perspectives at the Latvian Military Academy. During the meeting the international Army Command and Staff Officer Course and the Junior Staff Officer Course were introduced at length and a discussion on further bilateral cooperation took place.

January 20, US Ambassador in Lithuania Anne E. Derse presented decorations to 15 Lithuanian military for service in Afghanistan. The event was also attended by Land Force Commander Maj Gen Jonas Vytautas Žukas, Capability and Armament Director (MOD) Brig Gen Almantas Leika, and Chief of the Joint Headquarters Col Vilmantas Tamošaitis.

 

Lithuanian troops and representatives of the Public Security Service received Pennsylvania Commendation Medals on behalf of the Governor of Pennsylvania and the Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG). The medals were bestowed on two teams of Lithuanian peacekeepers that conducted service in Afghanistan from October 2010 to April 2011 and from May 2011 to November 2011. Troops served in the Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT) along with their colleagues from Pennsylvania. Through collective efforts Lithuanian and US military personnel trained over a thousand of Afghan National Police officers.

On January 23 and 24 delegation of the Ministry of Defence of Armenia will be visiting Vilnius and will participate in military discussions with representatives of the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. The countries will exchange information about their respective defence policies, transformation of national armed forces, participation in multinational operation, and will discuss points of bilateral cooperation.

 

Representatives of both countries are also expected to sign a bilateral cooperation plan for 2012.

January 21, troops of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the ANA Training Team of the 14th shift of the Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-14) visited the village of Sohta-i-Sufla lying around 40 kilometers away from the provincial capital Chaghcharan. The ANA members delivered a batch of humanitarian aid to the villagers: household items, warm clothes, toys.

 

The village, according to Lithuanian military, accommodating nearly a thousand inhabitants is situated in a picturesque location surrounded by mountains and river Harirud. The patrol had to overcome a several hours long journey over the mountains by the sole road that leads to the settlement. In the village peacekeepers met with Sayed Yamid, senior of the village, discussed local problems and security situation. According to the locals, this was the first visit by ANA and Lithuanian troops in their village.

“It was with deepest sadness that I have learned about the tragic accident in Afghanistan that has taken lives of French soldiers and has left many injured. This is an immense pain and loss for the families of those who have perished. It is also a great loss for the country that has had to sacrifice the lives of its servicemen for peace and the brighter future of Afghan people.

 

Please, accept my personal condolences to you and to the families of the perished ones with the words of our deepest respect and the wishes for a quick recovery to the injured ones”, says the Lithuanian Minister of Defence Rasa Juknevičienė to the French Minister of Defence Gérard Longuet.

On January 19 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė participated in the meeting of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen where the perspectives of the Baltic Air Policing mission, smart defence, the operation of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan and joint military training was addressed.

 

“Collective planning within NATO is of utmost importance to us, just like joint military training”, Minister of National Defence said.

Cadets from France begin studies at the Lithuanian Military Academy

January 16, cadets Rocipon Frédéric, Maxime Serres and Vincent Schouteden arrived from the Saint-Cyr Military Academy in France to study English at the General Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. The English Language Course will last from January to February.

 

The cadets wil be accommodated together with Lithuanian cadets of the Military Academy, they will be able to familiarize with the activity of the Lithuanian Military academy and get a closer view of military studies in Lithuania.

On January 18 and 19 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius will participate in the meeting of the Military Committee in Brussels (Belgium).

 

At the meeting Chiefs of Defence of NATO countries will discuss the aspects of implementing the new NATO’s Strategic Concept, progress of NATO transformation and ongoing military operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

Reorganization of the structure of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be continued in 2012 as a part of the Armed Defence Concept of the Republic of Lithuania.

 

“The constantly changing security environment and development of technology demands for permanent improvement of defence plans, structure of military force, training and supply of troops. Transformation of the Armed Forces is an ongoing process that incapacitates military structure to respond to new security challenges, technological advances, and emerging new tasks”, said Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen A.Pocius.
