Defence Minister of Lithuania and Canada discussed the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago

“NATO Summit in the USA is important for Lithuania for the transatlantic connection. We support the initiatives that strengthen NATO”, said Rasa Juknevičienė in a meeting with Defence Minister of Canada Peter MacKay in Ottawa, Wednesday. It was the first visited conducted by a Lithuanian Minister of Defence in Canada. The meeting Ministers addressed the topics of the NATO Summit which will be held within a short while in Chicago.

From April 30 to May 2 Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Maj Gen takes part at the US National Defence University’s (NDU) workshop in Warsaw (Poland) that pulls together NDU graduates in Europe.

 

The aim of the seminar is to strengthen regional security cooperation and sharing experience. The workshop will be conducted by NDU experts temporarily working in Europe.

Activity of PRT-14 approaching the end of rotation was presented to Chaghcharan media

On April 29 personnel of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-14) held a press conference for media representatives of Chaghcharan at the PRT base to spread information about the activity of PRT-14 approaching the end of their service in Afghanistan.

 

The press conference was attended by Governor of Ghor Dr. Abdullah Heiwad, PRT Commander Col Eligijus Senulis and Head of the PRT Civilian Element Jurgis Stanaitis.

From April 14 to 26 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius participated in the EU and NATO military Committees’ meetings in Brussels, Belgium.

 

On April 25 and 26 NATO and NATO partner states’ CHODs met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in a NATO Military Committee session and discussed NATO future priories and challenges.

 

At the meeting perspectives of the NATO operations underway, including NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, were addressed. NATO Strategic Plan in Afghanistan was discussed in the presence of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) partners, ISAF Commander Gen John R. Allen via teleconference presented relevant points of the operation. NATO CHODs focused, too, considerably on other military operations of the Alliance in Afghanistan, Kosovo, NATO counter-piracy and counter-terrorism operations and discussed the experience from the NATO operation in Libya.

Polish fighters took charge of security of the Baltic skies

April 26, formal rotation of contingent ceremony was held at the Lithuanian Air Force’s Šiauliai Air Base hosting the Baltic Air Policing mission. After four months on service German Air Contingent were replaced by a Polish air unit with four Mig-29 fighter jets.

 

“NATO Air Policing mission in the Baltic States is small in scope but huge in meaning. It is evidence of NATO’s commitment to ensure security in the entire allied airspace”, said Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas. “Defence Minister of the Baltic States stressed in the meeting in Brussels several days ago the importance of solidarity in NATO, as well as the necessity to continue developing Smart Defence where countries pool capabilities to obtain economic benefit, therefore the mission is a splendid example of smart defence. Lithuania and other Baltic has undertaken and will continue increasing Host Nation Support to improve conditions for the countries deploying on the Baltic Air Policing mission.

Formal deployment of military personnel to the mission in Afghanistan will be held in Alytus

On April 25 a formal deployment ceremony will be held in Alytus at the Monument of the Freedom Angel for the Lithuanian peacekeepers sent to the International Security Force’s (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan. The 15th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-15), Police Advisory Team (PAT-1), Military Advisors Team (MAT-1) and troops delegated to the ISAF Joint Headquarters and the ISAF Regional Command-West will begin their service in Afghanistan from mid-May.

 

The deployment ceremony will be attended by Vice Minister of National Defence Mykolas Juozapavičius, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Maj Gen Jonas Vytautas Žukas, ambassadors of foreign countries, leadership of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Mechanized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf and units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, troops, authorities of Alytus City and district, and families of the troops.

Chiefs of Transformation workshop held in Vilnius

From April 17 to 19 the first meeting of the Chiefs of Transformation (COT) of the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) this year took place in Vilnius. Such meetings take place biannually with an aim of exchanging information on the transformation processes ongoing in the national armed forces as well conducting a run-up for the annual COT Conference held each December.

 

Along with representatives of Lithuania the work meeting was also attended by representatives of 17 NATO countries, ACT, National Defense University (NDU), and NATO Headquarters Military Cooperation Division (MCD).

From April 24 to 26 Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius will participate in the meeting of the Military Committee of the European Union Committee (EUMC) and NATO Military Committee (NATO-MC) in Brussels (Belgium).

 

In the April 26 session of EUMC will address strategic defence priorities of the EU, considerable attention will be paid to the possibilities of Capability Pooling and Sharing among member states, as well as the perspective as conflict prevention development. Chief of Defence of the EU countries will discuss military operations conducted by the European Union in the Western Balkans and Africa. During the meeting the new chairman of the EU Military Staff will be elected.

On Wednesday Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė stressed at the NATO Defence Ministers' meeting that NATO Defence Summit in Chicago must result in announcing NATO's decision to develop capabilities for protecting the allies from the full range of threats, including the most complicated scenarios.

 

“Both air-ground surveillance and missile defence systems are meant to strengthen the allied capabilities to protect the allies and respond to other sorts of crises,” Lithuanian Defence Minister.

Commander of ISAF Regional Command-West paid a formal visit to Chaghcharan

April 18, Commander of the Regional Command-West (RW-C) Brig Gen Luigi Chiapperini paid his first formal visit to the base of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team.

 

During the visit PRT-14 Commander Col Eligijus Senulis, and Commanders of Afghan National Army and Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT-3) presented security situation in the province and undertaken tasks. Head of the Civilian Component Jurgis Stanaitis introduced activities and projects conducted by the Special Mission of the Republic of Lithuania and international partners.
