Minister of National Defence met with Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China

March 28, in a meeting with Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China Gen Caihou Hu in Beijing Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė emphasized the importance of the following year to Lithuania as the year of the EU Presidency.

 

“The approaching Lithuania’s Presidency of the European Union, strategic partner of China, is a strong aspect of this visit,” Minister said.

 

Bilateral relations and possibilities of cooperation were addressed in the meeting.

March 28, a delegation of cadets from the United States of America paid a visit to the Ministry of National Defence.

 

Representatives of the Lithuanian Military Academy et with representative of the US Embassy in Lithuania Lt Col Stephen Timmons, leader of the group Dr. David Sacko, US cadets and escorting officer 1st Lt Ieva Kuzminaitė. In the meeting activity of the Lithuanian Military Academy and studies of cadets in the institutions were presented to the guests.

On March 29 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas received a delegation of students of the Bundeswehr Military Academy for general staff commanding officers and staff officers (Germany).

 

At the meeting such points as the Baltic Air Policing mission and energy security were discussed. Representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces also briefed the guests about Lithuania's engagement in multinational operations, reform of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, structural changes and capability development, etc.

March 28, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė paid a visit to the Peace Support Centre near Beijing where military personnel of China train and prepare for peacekeeping operations.

 

“Peacekeeping operations or other multinational operations are a vital area of future cooperation between our countries,” Lithuanian Minister stressed. ”We could conduct expert and student exchange as practical implementation of the treaty signed yesterday”.

imgNATO and Partner air forces finish training for safety in Baltic airspace The eleventh sequel of the Baltic Region Training Event (BRTE XI) was completed on 28 March when all assets involved in the event were safely back at their home bases. The two-day training event brought together German Phantom fighter aircraft and Swedish Gripen as well as Finnish Hornet jets in the Baltic region to execute a scenario where a Lithuanian Spartan transport aircraft simulated a loss of communication above international waters in the Baltic Sea.

March 24, troops of the Afghan National Army (ANA) deployed in Ghor province conducted a joint patrol with the Lithuanian-led PRT ANA Training Team to a village settled near the Bayan mountain chain.

 

ANA troops handed over to locals items of humanitarian assistance, clothes and footwear. In a meeting with local representatives PRT and ANA commanders collected first-hand experiences of problems and needs of local people.

March 27, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė signed an agreement on defence cooperation and discussed a range of points related to regional security, military cooperation between Lithuanian and Chinese armed forces and participation in multinational operations during a meeting with Defence Minister of China Gen Liang Guanglie in Beijing (China).

 

The treaty foresees areas where military cooperation will be developed. The covered areas include military consultations, training, and exchange of experience from multinational operations.

March 27 to 30 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will be conducting a formal visit in China where she is expected to meet with Defence Minister of China Gen Guanglie Liang and sign an agreement on defence cooperation. That is going to be an unprecedented agreement between Lithuania and China. The bilateral agreement stipulates forms and areas of bilateral cooperation, foresees mutually beneficial relations in such areas as involvement in operations and exchange of training experience in military training institutions.

 

Lithuanian Minister will discuss during the meetings the key points of regional security, perspectives of bilateral cooperation, exchange opinions on the engagement of the countries in multinational operations. Moreover, the possibility to expand the dialog of NATO and EU and China will be looked at. During the visit meetings with the Central Military Commission, holding joint responsibility of the national armed forces with the State Council, Vice Chairman Gen Caihau Xu, and Commander of Shanghai Military District.

March 22, Vice Minister of National Defence for Defence Policy and International Relations Vytautas Umbrasas will participate in the European Union’s Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels (Belgium). The event will focus on the points of developing military capabilities within the EU and strengthening partnerships. The EU Defence Ministers will also review the ongoing EU’s military operations and discuss security challenges in Europe and the entire world.

On March 21, in Kabul Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius met with Commander of the Special operations Forces of the International Security Assistance Force’s (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan Brig Gen Mark Smethurst.

 

During the meeting military commanders discussed security situation in the country, the transfer of security onto local administration process ongoing in the country and the role and tasks of the special operations forces in the process.
