Vice Minister of National Defence met with Germany's Parliamentary Secretary of State for Defence in Šiauliai while he is visiting German Air Contingent

March 23-24, Thomas Kossendey, Germany's Parliamentary Secretary of State for Defence and the accompanying delegation paid a visit to the Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force in Šiauliai. The guest met with Vice Minister of National Defence Indrė Pociūte-Levickienė, Commander of the Air Base Lt Col Virginijus Steponavičius, German troops from the Wittmund Air Base in Lower Saxony deployed with six double-seat F-4 „Phantom” on the Baltic Air Policing mission, and listened to a presentation by Contingent Commander Lt Col Holger Radmann on the mission and its basic features.

 

Lithuanian and German representatives exchanged views of their respective countries in the context of the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago, addressed reforms and processes in the national defence systems, the Baltic Air Policing mission, multinational operations, Exercise Steadfast Jazz planned next in Lithuania, energy security and other points.

Troops of the Mortised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf attend operational planning exercise in Latvia

On March 8 and 9 members of the command staff and assigned battalions of the Motorised Infantry Brigade (MIB) Iron Wolf will attend a Danish Division-organised headquarters training event Red Knight 2012 in Riga, capital of Latvia. In the event Lithuanian troops drill skills of military operational planning in multinational environment and train to complete the procedures of military decision-making process in compliance with NATO requirements.

 

“The key accent of the exercise is planning of defence operations, which provides a great opportunity to deepen the troops’ knowledge. Joint exercise with our partners enhance qualification of our troops, encourage improvement across functional areas and gives an opportunity to test our readiness to plan defence military operations in a higher-level units because national defence is our priority task”, MIB Iron Wolf Commander Col Valdemaras Rupšys commented on the ongoing exercise.

New projects of infrastructure improvement opened in Chaghcharan

December 28, the following public welfare infrastructure objects installed in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province, on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funding were opened: approximately 8 thousand sq m of pavement, a parking lot, and approximately fifty stationary garbage dumpsters.

 

With the total value of over 300 thousand USD these are just several out of the numerous USAID projects aimed at greater public welfare in Ghor.

 

According to Governor of Ghor Dr. Abdullah Heiwad who attended the opening ceremony, efforts of local administration and multinational partners had changed the capital and had made it more beautiful and modern during the several latter years.

Next year contingents of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will continue standby in the NATO Response Force

Standby of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the NATO Response Force (NRF) end on December 31. This year the Lithuanian Armed Forces have deployed a range of military contingents formed of land, air, naval and logistic components – over 200 troops in total. Next year Lithuanian military will conduct service with NRF as well.

 

The largest unit that has nearly reached the end of its duty in NRF is the Force Protection Company formed by the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion. Personnel of the unit verified their readiness for standby as a Force Protection Company during the Steadfast Juncture 2011 exercise which took place in November 2011 in the Pabradės Training Area to certify the Deployable Joint Staff Element (DJSE) NRF 2012.

December 28, the new Defence Attaché of Ukraine in Lithuania Capt (N) Dmytro Donskoi was accredited in a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania, the outgoing Col Serhij Kundius was farewelled in the same event.

 

The new Ukraine’s representative was accredited by Vice Minister of National Defence Mykolas Juozapavičius.

 

Before the present posting the new Defence Attaché Capt (N) D. Donskoi served at the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. Officer also served at the headquarters of the Polish Navy, as staff officer in the Ukrainian Contingent in the UN mission in Lebanon, and as Defence Air Force and Naval Attaché of Ukraine in Syria. Col D. Donskoi graduated from the Kiev Higher Naval Political College, Ukraine’s National Defence Academy in Kiev, Naval War College Newport (USA). The officer is fluent in Russian, English and Chinese. He is married and has two daughters.

December 22, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan and Special Representative Ambassador Vygaudas Ušackas and Head of the Special Mission of the Republic of Lithuania in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Justinas Bakūnas with a delegation paid a visit to the camp of Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province. They were accompanied by Head of the Afghan Civilian Personnel Institute F. Osmani.

 

The guests were briefed on the activity of Chaghcharan PRT and security situation in the province, development-targeted projects and programmes undertaken by Lithuania, USA and Japan, and the EU activities in the province.

December 23, live videoconference connected the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and Afghanistan from where Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė, Chief of Defence Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius and Chief of the Joint Headquarters Vilmantas Tamošaitis sent Christmas wishes to the military personnel serving in the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), Special Operations Squadron, Air Mentoring Team, National Support Element and ISAF commands and their colleagues from other countries.

December 22, the last rotation of personnel before Lithuania’s withdrawal from the NATO Training Mission-Iraq (NTM-I), returned to Lithuania.

 

“It was a big challenge for the Lithuanian Armed Forces and I am very happy that our troops have done their job well and earned superb evaluations by personnel of partner countries and Iraq. Naturally, in this mission our servicemembers have also gained priceless experience which will be useful in training for national defence assignments”, R. Juknevičienė said.

One more group of local policemen graduated from the Lithuanian-led POMLT course

December 20, members of the Lithuanian-led Police Operational Liaison and Mentoring Team (POMLT) presented graduation certificates to 39 policemen of Ghor in the Police Headquarters based in Chaghcharan after finishing the basic patrol course.

 

It was the fifth basic police patrol course POMLT have organised for police officers of Ghor. For six weeks local policemen were actively studying police tactics, search for explosives, formations and other routine police activities. Along with police tactics POMLT also promotes spread of literacy among local policemen so the course included writing and Islamic religion and culture.

Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė extend condolences over the death of Polish peacekeepers in Afghanistan

Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė expressed her heartfelt condolences over the death of five Poland’s servicemembers killed in the Ghazi province in Afghanistan on Wednesday during a phone conversation with Defence Minister of Poland Tomasz Siemoniak.

 

“I am truly saddened by this tragedy that has struck families and relatives of your servicemembers. It is a huge loss for the country that sacrificed the lives of those who were fighting for peace and a brighter future for the Afghan people. I am with you with all of my heart”, R. Juknevičienė said.
