NATO Air Policing mission to be transferred from Denmark to Germany

On January 2 four F4 Phantom fighters of the German Air Force will land in the Šiauliai Air Base. German air personnel will replace Danish troops currently on guard of the Baltic airspace with four F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters.

 

Official date of transfer is January 4. German air contingent will ensure security of the Baltic skies for the fifth time.

November 29, official homecoming and decorations ceremony was held in the Freedom Square of Panevėžys for the 13th rotation of the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team of Ghor province, Afghanistan, the 2nd shift of the Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (POMLT-2), and military personnel who served across the international NATO headquarters in Afghanistan.

 

Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius bestowed medals for International Operations on the peacekeepers during a celebratory formation, signed combat flag of the Mindaugas Battalion with a silver-plated insignia and a plaque marking that the flag flew in Afghanistan from April to November of 2011 while PRT-13 ensured peace and security in Ghor province, Afghanistan, a part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Medals and certificates of commendation were presented to some of the returning troops for distinguished and professional service and excellent and resourceful completion of tasks.

On November 30 and December 1 Vice Minister of National Defence for Defence Policy and International Relations Vytautas Umbrasas will attend the EU Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels (Belgium).

 

Agenda of the meeting is expected to cover multilateral initiatives of capability development, points of the EU operations and partnerships, progress of the EU military operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and off the Somali coast, Ministers are also expected to exchange views on other initiatives in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) area and validate conclusions of the Council regarding CSDP.

Energy Security Centre will collaborate with US European Command

On November 25 a delegation of US congressmen led by Chairman of the Committee on Rules of the House of Representatives of David Dreier will pay a visit to the Energy Security Centre (ESC) functioning in the premises of the Gen Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy. Head of the Centre Audrius Brūzga will present to the guests the Protocol of Cooperation signed between the Energy Security Centre and the US European Command (US EUCOM), and activity of the Centre.

 

The event will also be attended by the US Ambassador in Lithuania HE Anne Derse, representatives of the National Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministries and the Energy Security Centre.

November 24, military aircraft bringing the13th shift of Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team back to Lithuania landed at the Šiauliai Airport.

 

The shift formed by troops of the King Mindaugas Mechanised Infantry Battalion stationed in Panevėžys began service in the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor this May. In November it as replaced by the 14th rotation based on the 5th Territorial Unit of the Vytis Military District of the Lithuanian National Defence Force.

Formation marked Lithuanian Armed Forces Day in the Cathedral Square in Vilnius

November 23, a celebratory formation took place in the Cathedral Square and a parade down the Gediminas Avenue (Vilnius) in commemoration of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Day. Representatives from across the four branches of the Lithuanian Armed Forces participated in the event. Both the formation and the parade took place under the conduct of Chief of Joint Headquarters Col Vilmantas Tamošaitis.

 

President of Lithuania and Commander in Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Dalia Grybauskaitė, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lt Gen Arvydas Pocius delivered congratulations to the Lithuanian military personnel.

Command of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf participates in multinational training in Denmark

From November 21 to 23 Commander of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf (MIB Iron Wolf) Col Valdemaras Rupšys with military personnel of the Brigade’s command staff participate in command post exercise (CPX) Errant Knight organised by the Danish Division in Denmark, Aalborg. During the Exercise military personnel of staffs affiliated to the Division drill operational planning skills. Apart from Lithuanian troops the Exercise involves military personnel from the Danish Division Staff and staff servicemembers of the affiliated Estonian and Lithuanian brigades – approximately 50 persons in total.

 

The Exercise Errant Knight designed on the basis of the combat training plan of the Danish Division is a lead-in into the combat cycle next year. During the training event staff personnel improve readiness to plan defensive and offensive operations in a superior multinational combat unit according to a scenario simulated by the exercise organizers with regard to territorial peculiarities of the United Kingdom.

Lithuania delegated representatives to NATO Charity Bazaar

On November 20 the 43rd NATO Charity Bazaar was held. Representatives from 28 allies and some of the partner states presented and vended national souvenirs, popular goods, works of art, offered national dishes and dainties for visitors. Charitable lottery Tombola was organised to which Lithuania contributed by a prize established by Hotel Navalis (Klaipėda).

 

All the money raised through the project will be transferred to a spectrum of charitable projects submitted or undertaken by spouses of military representatives of NATO countries together with charitable organisations. Spouse of the Lithuanian Military Representative to NATO and EU Irena Vaikšnorienė has been representing Lithuania in the international bazaar organising committee and has been coordinating the run-up activities for four years in a row. She is assisted by the staff of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Lithuania to NATO, their spouses and families.

Today we mark the 93rd anniversary of the establishment of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The deeds and spirit of our ancestors inspire warriors of this day. The lyrics of the National Anthem are still calling for ladling strength from our ancient history.

 

Lithuanian army has been famous as battle-seasoned over ages. People used to sacrifice their lives for the freedom of their country without being demanded to in the hope that they were serving for their country, their people and their Motherland. War history of Lithuania proves that our freedom has not come for free and that we deserve it.

10th Baltic Region Air Training Event arranged

On November 21 and 22 NATO’s Allied Air Command Ramstein (Germany) will hold the 10th Baltic Region Air Training Event (BRTE X). The event will demonstrate NATO commitments to international security, solidarity between the allies and confidence.
 
“It is our pleasure to receive NATO partners in Lithuania for a joint exercise in the Baltic skies for the tenth time. We work together towards shared security. BRTE is an excellent opportunity to display solidarity between NATO and the Baltic States,” Commander Lithuanian Air Force Brig Gen Edvardas Mažeikis said.
