Lithuanian and the U.S. Special Operations Forces’ soldiers developed joint actions

In July Lithuanian Special Operations Forces jointly with the U.S. Special Operations Forces and U.S. Navy SEALS in Lithuania participated in military exercises, exchanged the experience from multinational operations and improved joint operational skills.

Three months duration joint combined exercise held in the territory of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea and Klaipėda combined land, sea and air elements. During the training Lithuanian Special Operations troops together with Americans were engaged in a broad spectrum of land and water special operations, they conducted shooting, diving, rope landing, liberation of hostages, parachute jumps into the Baltic Sea.

July 28 decrees of the President of Lithuania on higher military ranks granted to officers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces came into force: the rank of Lieutenant General was bestowed on the Chief of Defence Major General Arvydas Pocius, the rank of Major General - on the Commander of the Air Force Brigadier General Edvardas Mažeikis, the rank of Brigadier General – on the Director General for Capabilities and Armaments Colonel Almantas Leika.

Tribute paid to World War I and World War II German soldiers killed in Lithuania

July 27 soldiers of Honor Guard of the Lithuanian Armed Forces paid tribute to German soldiers killed in World War I and World War II by laying flower wreaths in soldiers’ cemetery in Vingis Park.

The ceremony, organized by the National Union for Care of German Soldiers’ Graves and the Service for Care of Cultural Values will conclude the camp of National Union for Care of German Soldier’s Graves in Lithuania which lasted for one and a half weeks.

National Defence Minister expressed condolences to the Norwegian people and the country's Defence Minister

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičiene in her letter to the Norwegian Defence Minister Grete Faremo expressed sympathy for the Norwegian people and relatives of victims regarding violent attacks, carried out in the capital of Norway Oslo and in the youth camp on Friday afternoon, which have taken dozens of casualties.

Soldiers of Afghanistan National Army are trained to perform new tasks

July 23 soldiers of Training Team serving in the composition of the thirteenth rotation of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT-13) located in Afghanistan Ghor Province conducted the combat training exercise for the soldiers of Afghanistan National Army (ANA). During the exercise ANA company soldiers were trained to operate in the mobile checkpoint.

Regarding information in the media on possible links of radicals with Lithuanian Armed Forces

Reacting to information published in the media that persons associated with ultranationalist organizations may be serving in Lithuanian Armed Forces commanders of the Armed Forces claim they will not tolerate radical views, racism, nationalism or views based discrimination.

 

‘Military service is incompatible with any participation in activities of ultranationalist organizations, doubtful reputation movements which instigate hate and are aimed against state or its citizens.’ – said Acting Chief of Defence, Land Forces Commander Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas.

U.S. Army Europe Commander underlined the strength of his country's commitment to collective defence

U.S. remains the main and very reliable partner of Lithuania, the U.S. forces in Europe, despite the reduction will be able to fulfil all the obligations to the United States’ allies, including the collective defence "- said U.S. Army Europe Commander Lieutenant General Mark P. Hertling on 21 July in Vilnius, where he met Lithuanian National Defence Ministry and Armed Forces representatives. One of the major objectives of the visit of U.S. General to Lithuania was to assure Lithuania of U.S. commitment to strengthen cooperation between both nations. "We have to take an opportunity to work together to strengthen the Alliance. I think the new collaborative initiatives that increase readiness quality of the Lithuanian Armed Forces would directly contribute to strengthening of Lithuania’s security”, - said General.

Library opened at Chaghcharan Teacher Training Centre

July 14, public library was opened at the Teacher Training Centre in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province.

 

The library and computer class were installed from the funds of the public diplomacy programme of the US Embassy in Afghanistan. The major part of books in the library, approximately 500, was bought from the financing of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan.

New shift of Lithuanian Special Operations Forces Squadron Aitvaras begins duty in Afghanistan

In July a new shift of the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces (LITHSOF) Squadron Aitvaras began service in Afghanistan. The outgoing rotation was redeployed to Lithuania.

 

Rasa Juknevičienė, Minister of National Defence, expressed her delight about the allies’ high evaluation of LITHSOF Squadron while meeting with LITHSOF military personnel.

 

Minister conveyed to the troops thanks of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Commander Gen David Petraeus and Commander ISAF Regional Command - South Maj Gen James Terry for the impeccable completion of tasks.

Baltic Region Training Event organised in the Baltic States for the ninth time

July 12-13, the ninth Baltic Region Training Event (BRTE IX) will be organised in the Baltic States by the Headquarters Allied Air Command Ramstein (HQ AC Ramstein).

 

Forward Attack Controller (FAC) teams from the three Baltic States’ Armed Forces trained calling in Close Air Support procedures at the Adazi Training Area (Latvia). L-39 light assault aircraft of the Lithuanian Air Force and F16 „Fighting Falcon“ fighter-jet of the US Air Force played Air Support Aircraft. BRTE IX is one of the opportunities to train FACs for the mission in Afghanistan. At the moment four Lithuanian military serve in the Tactical Air Control Party in composition of the Danish Division in the province of Helmand, south of Afghanistan.
