Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė conducts work visit in Israel

Minister of National Defence left on a work visit to the State of Israel on May 29.

 

Minister will meet with Defence Minister of Israel Ehud Barak, Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman, and Shaul Mofaz, the Chairman of the Forgien Affairs and Defence Committee at the Knesset.

 

In the meetings R. Juknevičienė will discuss defence cooperation between Lithuania and Israel, security situation in the Middle East, defence reform in Lithuania, participation in Multinational operations, and other matters.

At the meeting of the Baltic Defence Ministers which was held in Latvia on May 26 Lithuanian Defence Minister Rasa Juknevičienė, Estonian Defence Minister Mart Laar and Latvian Defence Minister Artis Pabriks signed a communiqué setting down objectives and principles of further cooperation of the countries.

 

According to R. Juknevičienė, the signed document embeds the aspiration to deepen mutual integration of the Baltic defence systems by drawing it closer to the Nordic cooperation model, as well as continued development of practical Nordic-Baltic cooperation.

On May 23 – 24 Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania conducted spring tour across the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

On the first day of the tour Defence Attachés visited the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Motorised Infantry Battalion in Sakalinės village (Tauragės Distr.). The guests met with the command, familiarized with activities and tasks of the Battalion subordinate to the Motorised Infantry Brigade „Iron Wolf “of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

May 23, Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas with other 17 members of the European Union signed in Brussels (Belgium) the European Air Transport Fleet (EATF) Programme aimed at enhancing military airlift capabilities of countries taking part in the programme and employing financial resources in a more efficient way.

 

Participants of the Programme will seek establishing conditions to employ the existing airlift capabilities more efficiently (by means of pooling, collectively rendering logistic support, etc.) by collective procurement of new assets, optimization of a variety of organizational structures, and uniforming rules and procedures.

 

The European Air Transport Fleet Programme was launched on the initiative of the European Defence Agency (EDA) and it will be the first EDA’s programme Lithuania will join. Lithuania’s participation will not entail any financial obligations. However, in the future Ministry of National Defence foresees assessing Lithuania’s capacity to enter the Programme with a concrete contribution.

Biggest military exercise in Lithuania this year “Amber Hope 2011” approaching

“Amber Hope 2011”, the biggest multinational military exercise Lithuania will host this year, will begin on June 13. Almost 2200 military servicemembers and civilians from nine NATO and NATO partner countries – Canada, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Latvia, Norway, Poland, USA and Lithuania – will take part in the exercise which will be conducted in two separate locations in Lithuania – Pabradės Training Area and Lithuania’s territorial waters in the Baltic Sea.

 

The aim of the exercise is to improve interoperability among military units of NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries with the view of conducting NATO-led crisis response operations and to enhance military cooperation. “Amber Hope 2011” will also be a great opportunity to test and improve Lithuania’s preparation to provide Host Nation Support (HNS) for incoming forces.

On May 25-26 Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will attend a meeting of the Baltic Defence Ministers in Liepaja, Latvia. Lithuanian Minister with her Baltic counterparts Artis Pabriks (Latvia) and Mart Laar (Estonia) are planned to discuss security situation in the Baltic region, Baltic defence cooperation projects, and perspectives of deepening cooperation and compatibility of the Baltic defence planning.

 

Lithuanian Minister is expected to review the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, missile defence and other points. The meeting Ministers will also share experience of participation in multinational operations, and discuss agenda of NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting planned to take place in Brussels in June.

May 20, Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with Permanent Secretary of Defence of the Estonian Ministry of Defence Mikk Marran for a work dinner and discussed bilateral defence cooperation.

 

The meeting officials discussed further cooperation among the Baltic States, joint projects with the Nordic countries, current points of defence in Lithuania and Estonia, matters of defence budget, and voluntary forces of Lithuanian and Estonian Armed Forces.

May 19, Minister of Defence of Moldova Vitalie Marinuţa accompanied by the Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas continued his official two-day visit in Lithuania in Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force.

 

The guests were met by Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force Brig Gen Edvardas Mažeikis and Commander of Šiauliai Air Base Lt Col Virginijus Steponavičius.

In the meeting with Minister of Defence of Moldova Vitalie Marinuţa Lithuanian Minister of Defence Rasa Juknevičienė highlighted that Lithuania supports Moldova’s euro-integration.

 

„Moldova is a good example of the progress we have come through while seeking associate EU membership“, Lithuanian Minister said.

 

In the meeting security situation in the region, relations with neighbour states, points of energy independence relevant both to Lithuania and Moldova were addressed. The meeting Ministers also discussed the progress in defence reforms, shared opinions on the perspectives of participation in multinational operations, points of bilateral defence cooperation.

May 16, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė met with representatives of Defence Committees of the Nordic, Baltic countries and Poland.

 

At the meeting Minister as a member of the Committee on National Security and Defence of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania expressed satisfaction that a meeting of such format involving participants from the Nordic countries and Poland is for the first time held in Lithuania.

 

„My sincere hope is that we will organise meetings in such format in the future as well. There are links between our countries which are especially tight in defence sector, therefore defence is unthinkable without your neighborhood“, said R.Juknevičienė.
