Formation of joint Lithuania’s, Poland’s and Ukraine’s brigade addressed in Kiev

February 24, ministerial and military representatives of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine discussed aspects formation of a joint trilateral Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian brigade POLUKRBRIG at a Ukrainian-initiated and hosted meeting in Kiev and presented a draft intergovernmental contract on the establishment of the multinational unit with the provisions to be agreed on in the future.

 

The intergovernmental contract is planned to be signed this year, formation of the trilateral unit is expected to follow by 2013. Partners of the project have agreed to contribute equal part of personnel to the formation. Lithuania plans to commit a battalion-sized unit, one of the infantry battalions of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, to LITPOLUKRBRIG.

Doctor from Lithuania shared her knowledge and experience with personnel of Chaghcharan hospital

February 24, military and civilian personnel of the Lithuanian-led PRT, a doctor from Lithuania and Governor of Ghor province organised a ceremony of presentation of qualification certificates for medics of Chaghcharan hospital and delivered assistance. At a solemn ceremony held at the Governor of Ghor’s palace certificates of qualification were presented to doctors and midwives of the hospital who graduated from qualification courses.

 

Governor of Ghor Dr. Abdullah Heiwad, commander of PRT-12 Col Remigijus Baltrėnas, head of the civilian component of PRT Eugenijus Vaicekauskas, doctor obstetrician-gynecologist Julija Diomina, representatives of local administration and media took part in the ceremony.

February 24–25, Minister of National R. Juknevičienė and her EU counterparts in Budapest addressed initiatives of closer cooperation in capability development, invitations to strengthen the common EU security and defence policy, relations of the European Union with NATO and the tUN, progress of the current military operations of the European Union and security situation in Libya.

 

„Discussions of the EU Defence Ministers were closely connected to one of the most acute today’s dilemmas of strengthening military capabilities of the EU states in the context of diminished defence spending,“ said R. Juknevičienė during the discussion over closer cooperation in capability sector. The Minister agreed with the common view that cooperation through pooling defence capabilities could be a solution in strengthening military capabilities of the EU states with smaller defence spending.

February 24–25, representatives of Lithuania, Finland and USA gathered for a conference held at the Joint Headquarters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to discuss preparation for the multinational exercise Amber Hope-11 Lithuania will host this summer. The multinational crisis response exercise will take place on June 13–23 in Pabradė Training Area (Lithuanian Armed Forces).

 

At the conference command group of the exercise and commanders of multinational battalions to take part in the exercise familiarised with operational plan and scenario of the exercise, and discussed other arrangement points with planning personnel of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Lithuanian logistics specialists return from Afghanistan

February 23, a homecoming ceremony will be held at the Logistics Command of the Lithuanian Armed Forces for the 4th shift of the National Support Element (NSE-4) returning from the mission in Afghanistan.

 

The ceremony will be attended by the Vice Minister of National Defence Rimas Jonaitis, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj Gen Arvydas Pocius, acting Commander of Logistics Command Lt Col Valdas Gegelevičius, military and civilian personnel of the Logistics Command, relatives of the returning soldiers, and other guests.

USA allocate half of million USD to destroy outdated and unused ammunition reserve

February 22, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and Ambassador of the United States HE Anne E. Derse approved a technical agreement between the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the United States Department of State on cooperation in destroying unused ammunition and explosives.

 

„We have a considerable reserve of unused ammunition. A part of it was inherited from the Soviet Union, some ammunition was donated by other states and turned unusable when weaponry of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was updated. Financial support from our strategic partner USA will help us manage bank of unused ammunition in future“, said Minister R. Juknevičienė.

Opportunities to gain vocational training created for locals of Ghor province

A new project was opened this year in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province of Afghanistan, to encourage local community to participate in the activity organised by the Vocational Training Centre (VTC) and to contribute to implementation of development cooperation projects.

 

The projects were initiated by the Afghanistan Organization Women Arise (AOWA) and financed from the funds of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Organisation and coordination of the projects also involves representatives of local administration and CIMIC Division of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT.

February 21, Vice Minister of National Defence Indrė Pociūtė-Levickienė met with the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Ministry of Defence of Germany Thomas Kossendey in Šiauliai. The high-ranking official and his delegation arrived in Lithuania for one day to visit servicemembers of Wittmund Air Base of the German Air Force deployed at Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force (LAF) on NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. The meetings were also attended by the Ambassador of Germany HE Hans Peter Annen, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Armed Forces of Lithuania.

February 15-16, Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania will gather for a meeting in Vilnius.

 

On the first day of the visit military representatives of foreign states will meet Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and representatives of the Ministry of National Defence. At the meeting the key priorities of Lithuania’s defence policy, defence budget and other points will be presented to the Defence Attachés.

Gen. David H. Petraeus, Commanding General of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan sent a letter to the Chief of Defence of Lithuania Gen. Maj. Arvydas Pocius offering thanks for Lithuania’s efforts and determination to contribute to the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan (NTM-A) by sending MI-17 trainers. .

 

Lithuanian-led multinational Air Mentor Team which was deployed to Afghanistan on February 8 has already begun its activity of training members of Afghan National Army (ANA) to conduct squadron-level helicopter operations. At Kandahar Airport in southern Afghanistan Lithuanian and Latvian military were joined by specialists from Belgium and Ukraine’s representatives are yet to come.
