Inspector of Arms Control Division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces visit the Russian Federation

January 31 – February 4, inspector of Arms Control Division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces with the French colleagues will conduct a joint inspection of a set region in the military divisions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation under the Vienna Document 1999.

 

The French-led team of military experts will verify military units of the Western Military District of the Russian Federation.

January 24, Coordinator of Afghanistan Ghor Province Illegal Armed Groups Disarmament Committee handed for disposal to the soldiers of Lithuanian-led Afghanistan Ghor Provice Reconstruction Team (PRT) the ammunition which was collected in the province by the local security forces.

January 18, Geoffrey Cooper, Deputy Head of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL) and EUPOL delegation paid a visit to the base of the Lithuanian-led PRT in Chaghcharan, province of Ghor. The guests met with EUPOL officers working in Ghor and Commander of PRT-12 Col. Remigijus Baltrėnas.

 

G. Cooper who assumed the office of the Deputy Head of EUPOL several months ago visited Ghor province to familiarise with the activity of the team of EUPOL division in Ghor implementing City Police and Justice Program (CPJP), and situation in Ghor.

Maj Gen A. Pocius attend Nordic-Baltic Chiefs of Defence meeting in Estonia

January 20-21, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj Gen Arvydas Pocius will attend the meeting of the Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) of the Nordic and Baltic countries in Estonia where his Danish, Estonian, Latvian, Norwegian and Swedish counterparts will also be present.

 

Nordic and Baltic CHODs are expected to discuss situation in the Baltic region, the multinational operation in Afghanistan, points of cooperation in cyber defence and training personnel of the European Union Battle Groups.

The first ANA troops deployed in Ghor province

January 12, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) aircraft landed in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province of Afghanistan, carrying the first fifteen troops of Afghan National Army (ANA) for permanent deployment in the province. ANA members brought along armored vehicles.

 

Deployment of a company in Ghor is foreseen in the nearest future. The unit will strengthen Afghan National Police capabilities ensuring security in the province side by side with the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team. By deploying into Chaghcharan Afghan National Security Forces will assume more responsibility for ensuring security in the province.

 

The ANA company will be moved from its former deployment in Herat to Chaghcharan.

Energy Security Centre opened at Lithuanian Military Academy

January 14, Energy Security Centre was opened at the Gen Jonas Žemaitis Lithuanian Military Academy in Vilnius. Ministry of National Defence will have an active role in the activities of the new Centre directly subordinate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a representative of the Ministry of National Defence will be appointed Deputy Director of the Centre, delegates of the Ministry will be included into the Centre’s Board. The Centre foresees aiming for the status of a NATO Centre of Excellence.

 

During the ceremony the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė recalled establishment of the centre from the starting point of the vision up to the persuasion were needed to prove the necessity of action in Lithuania’ energy security. However, today, as the Minister stressed, nobody questions the need for such centre. „A message was delivered at the Lisbon Summit – we should build an energy security shield and energy security capabilities. With the establishment of this centre we have made a step towards it“, highlighted the Minister.

On 14 January Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will participate in an informal discussion of European and North American strategists of international and security policy - politicians, political scientist, diplomats and analysts - held in Trakai. (Lithuania). The meeting will look into the issues of European Union's and NATO's activity, East-West relations and key strategic challenges feasible to occur to the Euro-Atlantic community in 2011.

 

Each year the already traditional Snow Meeting attracts great attention of international experts. It is an informal forum that puts forward ideas and proposals regarding further development of the European Union after the ratification of the Lisbon Summit, NATO activities after the adoption of the new Strategic Concept, perspectives of the Eastern neighborhood of the European Union and intensification of security in Europe.

January 12, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičiene met with the Vice Prime-Minister and State Minister on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Georgia Giorgi Baramidze on visit in Lithuania.

 

In the meeting the Vice Prime-Minister of Georgia expressed his point of view on the internal political and economical situation in his country, and accentuated Georgia’s determination to seek common goals of foreign policy – constructive relations with Russia, retrieval of annexed territories, and a full-fledged NATO membership. He also expressed a belief that in three years to come Georgia will fully ready to accept the partnership and a hope that the Alliance will agree on clear decisions of assistance to Georgia in acquiring NATO membership. Georgia is ready tosignificantly increase its contribution to NATO’s ISAF operation in Afghanistan.

5th shift of National Support Element deployed to Afghanistan

January 12, the fifth rotation of the National Support Element (NPE-5) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces was deployed to the mission in Afghanistan at Šiauliai Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force.

 

National flag of Lithuania was presented to Commander of NPE-5 Lt Col Saulius Rožėnas, the leaving rotation was blessed by Chaplain  Captain Tomas Rainys.

Brig Gen Artūras Leita, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force to date, is appointed high level planning executive of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Representation Team to OSCE as of January 10. For the term in this office Brig Gen A. Leita will be based in Lithuania. He will be responsible for coordination of cooperation projects of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and OSCE.

 

Col Antanas Jucius, Head of Air Surveillance and Control Command, will serve as acting Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force until nomination of a new Commander.
