German Air Contingent took over Baltic Air-policing mission from Czechs

imgAugust 31, rotation ceremony of air contingents of the allies deployed on the Baltic Air-policing mission took place in Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base (Šiauliai). After four months of duty Czech Air Contingent with four JAS-39 „Gripen" jets was replaced by German troops. For the two first months Baltic airspace will be guarded with four fourth generation „Eurofighter" jets to be deployed beyond Germany's territory in a multinational mission for the first time. Later F-4F „Phantom" will take their place. According to Commander of the first shift of German Air Contingent Lt. Col. Marco Griene, „Eurofighter" is one of the leading military aircraft in Europe equipped with cutting-edge information distribution system.

Ministry of National Defence cuts down on personnel abroad

Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania notified partner states on the decision to move residences of Lithuanian Defence Attaches from Germany and France back to Lithuania, Vilnius. The decision of temporary transfer was made in accordance with economical situation and is expected to save defence budget. It is allowed that the decision will help saving around 860 thousand Litas a year.

 

Defence Attaché based in Berlin also represented Lithuania's interested in Austria and Switzerland, and the one based in Paris - in Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Luxemburg. Both officers will begin service in the new location from September.

Two-day command post exercise „Red Knight" held in Rukla (Jonavos Distr.) for the MIB „Iron Wolf" and conducted by representatives of the Danish Division was concluded on August 26.

Commander of the Danish Division Maj. Gen. Agnus Rokos emphasized capability of the Lithuanian brigade's staff to plan operations and draft efficient operational orders regarding operations commenting on results of the exercise. According to Major General, the exercise also proved that operational procedures of the Danish and Lithuanian Brigades were perfectly interoperable, and MIB „Iron Wolf" make take part in international operations in composition of the Danish Division.

New fighter-jet arresting equipment in Šiauliai Airfield

New fighter-jet arresting equipment is opened for use in Šiauliai Military Airport. The equipment assembled in Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Šiauliai was certified appropriate on August 26 by commission of the State Territory Planning and Construction Inspection under the Ministry of Environment. The new equipment will replace mobile installations used till present.

Arresting gear was installed under the NATO Security Investment Programme, the project values up to 6m Litas. Installation works were done by UAB „Epregas" as contracted with the Lithuanian Air Force in 2008.

Command post exercise “Red Knight” organized by Danish division is conducted in Rukla

On 25-26 August multinational command post exercise "Red Knight" is conducted in Motorized Infantry Brigade "Iron Wolf" in Rukla (Jonava district).

Brigade "Iron Wolf" staff and units in the exercise participate as unit assigned to Danish division. Representatives of Danish division, Danish division soldiers' group including Commander of Danish division Major General Agnus Rokas is in command of the exercise.

During the exercise Brigade "Iron Wolf" command and staff officers improve their skills while planning multinational defensive operations, respond to operation situations and peculiarities of defensive operations.

imgOn 24-28 August Lithuanian Navy search and rescue vessel „Šakiai" in the Gulf of Ryga close to Latvian coast participate in rescue and oil spoil response exercise BALTEX DELTA 2009. In the exercise which is organized by Latvian Coast Guard Security Service and the Ministry of the Environment Protection participate around 15 vessels representing six countries, HELCOM member states: Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden and Germany. Nine from the 15 vessels participating in the exercise are oil pollution response vessels. Latvian Military Air Force aircraft is also planned to participate in the exercise.

On 24 August Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė by telephone offered condolences to the Estonian Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo regarding Estonian soldiers Warrant Officer Eerik Salmus and Sergeant Raivis Kang killed in Afghanistan on 24 August.
