International exercise for special operations forces JCET 2009 took place in Klaipėda

From June 2 to 30 Klaipėda hosted international three-week „JCET 2009" (Joint Combined Exchange Training) exercise for Lithuanian and the US Special Forces. Members of Lithuanian and American Special Forces drilled skills of combat actions, wide-scope special operations on land and in the sea, and shared experience.

 

Most of attention in the exercise was devoted to complicated out-of-sea special operations forces' actions: Lithuanian and American troops drilled actions in a captured ship in the water area of Klaipėda Seaport and open sea. Intervention actions were drilled on an open sea in a ferry lent by „DFDS LISCO" enterprise developing close and successful cooperation with Lithuanian Special Operations Forces.

Commander of the USA Pennsylvania National Guard Maj. Gen. Jessica L. Wright visits Lithuania

imgCommander of the Pennsylvania National Guard Maj. Gen. Jessica L. Wright will be visiting Lithuania from July 1 to 6.

On July 1 Maj. Gen. Jessica L. Wright will meet with the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė and Vice Minister Rimas Jonaitis at the Lithuanian MoND, later the guest will go to the Joint Staff Headquarters to meet with Head of Staff Brig. Gen. Algis Vaičeliūnas.

In the meetings the officials plan to discuss possible areas of cooperation with the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT and guidelines of further partnership. The US General will be awarded with the National Defence System Medal of Merit for personal contribution and merits in developing cooperation between Lithuanian and the US Armed Forces.

Experts of arms control of Lithuania will evaluate equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

On June 30 experts of arms control of Lithuania and their colleague from Portugal will conduct an evaluation visit in the 28th Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

The visit will be conducted under the Vienna Document signed by OSCE members in 1999. The document obliges parties to the agreement to provide information about national armed forces, plans of defence capabilities development, and military budget of on annual basis, and to notify about planned military activities in advance. In their turn, the states undertake to accept a set number of inspections and visits of foreign arms experts in their territory.

International competition for youth „ALIANTE

Finals of the international competition for pupils „ALIANTE 2009" will begin in Division General Stasys Raštikis NCO School (Kaunas) on June 29.

In the competition held throughout Europe pupils of secondary classes compete in their knowledge of international security and defence policy, activity of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), history, geography and political sciences, as well as test their abilities of team-work and strength by overcoming hard physical challenges. The „ALIANTE" competition held in another NATO country each year was first organised in the Czech Republic in 2001.

Agreement on classified information signed between Lithuania and France

Joint security agreement on exchange and protection of classified information will be signed during a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania on June 26 between Governments of Lithuania and France. The agreement will be signed by the State Secretary of the Ministry of National Defence Jūratė Raguckienė on behalf of Lithuania, and by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Lithuania François Laumonier on behalf of France.The agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation between Lithuanian and French institutions in the national security sector and at ensuring protection of the classified information exchanged by the countries.

Czech Air Contingent mark the Day of Czech Army and present air policing mission in the LAF Aviation Base

Czech Air Contingent protecting Baltic air space under the NATO Baltic Air-policing mission will hold a guest day and mark the 91st anniversary of the Czech Armed Forces on June 27 at the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Šiauliai.

Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Lithuania H.E. Alois Buchta, Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence Artur Plokšto, Inspector General Brig. Gen. Gintautas Zenkevičius, Commander Lithuanian Air Force Brig. Gen. Artūras Leita, command of the Lithuanian Air Force and the Aviation Base and other guests are planned to gather to the event. Foreign Defence Attachés based in the Baltic States as well as Defence Attachés of NATO member states were also invited to take part in the meeting.

Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė took part in the ceremony marking the end of mission of the Lithuanian platoon having operated successfully under NATO KFOR for ten years June 26, Kosovo.

Minister thanked Lithuanians for service and for the Polish and the Ukrainians - for cooperation (Lithuanian platoon was deployed with the joint POLUKRBAT Battalion of Poland and Ukraine). The ceremony was held in the military Camp Bondsteel based near Ferizaj/Urosevac.

Change of command of the Baltic Naval Squadron

Change of command ceremony of the Baltic Naval Squadron BALTRON will be held on June 26 in the Lithuanian Naval Force Flotilla of Warships (Klaipėda). Officer of the Lithuanian Naval Force Cmdr. Eugenijus Valikovas, present Commander of BALTRON, will be replaced by Lt. Cmdr. Maris Polencs, officer of the Naval Force of Latvia. A part of international staff will also rotate.

Supply and command ship of LNF „Jotvingis" (N42) will enter into the unit along with commissioning of the new Commander to replace LNF mine hunter and sweeper „Sūduvis" (M52). „Jotvingis" will be in command of captain Lt. Vytautas Šakalys.

Defence ministers of Lithuania and the Czech Republic will meet in the Aviation Base of Šiauliai

imgJune 24, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will meet with Defence Minister of the Czech Republic Martin Barták coming to Lithuania on an informal visit in the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Šiauliai.

During the informal meeting the Ministers will focus on the NATO Baltic Air-policing mission, and will also look at the ending Czech Presidency of the EU, energy security, and other current matters of the EU and NATO's security and defence.
