March 5, after a winter season break ”Aitvaras” Squadron of Lithuanian Special Operations Force is continuing ISAF mission in south Afghanistan. In winter duty at the base was conducted by the group of Special Operations Squadron.

Meeting with troops of ”Aitvaras” Squadron before deployment, Minister of National Defence Rasa Jukneviciene expressed appreciation and pride in combat readiness and firm determination of SOF members to display excellent performance of their tasks in the dangerous region of south Afghanistan.

In February Gen. Maj. Frank J. Kisner, Commander of Special Operations Command Europe, sent a letter to the Minister of National Defence Rasa Jukneviciene thanking for Lithuania's contribution to the mission in south Afghanistan. In the letter he gave high rating of professionality and determination of SOF soldiers and highlighted close cooperation of Lithuanian and American special forces developed since 2002.

”Among the forces of multiple nationalities deployed to the NATO-led ISAF mission in south Afghanistan soldiers of Lithuanian Special Operations Force demonstrate particular professionality, readiness, and determination, and excellent results while performing demanding and complicated tasks under their responsibility,” wrote Gen. Maj. F.J.Kisner.

Troops of Lithuanian Special Operations Force together with their counterparts from other NATO members are responsible for special surveillance, terrorist identification, detention and neutralisation, and other high-intensity combat tasks.

SOF soldiers had already been deployed to the US-led counter-terrorist operation ”Enduring Freedom” in Afghanistan in 2002-2004.

Ministry of National Defence passed a decision to send Lithuanian Special Operations troops to south Afghanistan in February 2007.
