Minister of National Defence of Lithuania had a meeting with NATO Secretary General in Brussels

Rasa Jukneviciene, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania visited NATO HQ in Brussels and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons on January 30. It was the first Minister's working visit to a foreign country.

Lithuania – among the states with the smallest defence budget in the NATO family

Financing for the national defence was cut down for the first time in the decade. This year Ministry of National Defence will receive a sum of money smaller by 168.7m Litas than it was planned, and smaller by 114.7m Litas than assignations made in 2008. Defence budget will make 1163m Litas, or 1.01% of GDP.

New Defence Attaché accredited for Lithuania

January 26, new Defence Attaché of Bulgaria, Capt.(N) Todor Yotov will be accredited in Lithuania. Defence Undersecretary for Defence Policy and International Relations Andrius Krivas, , Ambassador of Bulgaria in Lithuania Ivan Datchev, and ministerial and military representatives will attend the accreditation ceremony.

New patrol boat enter Lithuanian Naval Force

January 25, new patrol boat P12 coming from Denmark piered in Lithuanian Naval Force Flotilla in Klaipeda. The boat with a crew of 22 led by captain Lt. Laimonas Banys was met by Commander Lithuanian Naval Force Capt.(N) Olegas Marinicius and Commander of the LNF Naval Flotilla Cdr. Arunas Mockus.

imgJanuary 21, war reporter from the USA Michael Yon was given ”Quill of the Year 2008" award established by the leadership of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the Armed Forces. Colonel Antanas Jurgaitis, Defence, Army, Air and Naval Force Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania to the USA and Canada, gave the award and a letter from the Chief of Defence of Lithuania to the reporter in his office based in Washington DC (USA). The reporter was awarded for the article he published in his website describing Lithuanian military personnel serving in Afghanistan in an original manner.

Armaments inspector of Lithuanian Armed Forces will take part in evaluation visit in Georgia

On January 20-22 Lithuanian Armed Forces armaments control inspector will take part in an inspection in West Georgia led by Germany in the framework of the Vienna Document 1999. The inspection team will also include two Germans and one Belgian.

imgCourses of qualification improvement for personnel of provincial judicial institutions began in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghowr, January 18. Courses financed by the Lithuanian Government (under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Development Cooperation and Support to Democracy Programme) and the European Commission are designed for advanced listeners. They will help prosecutors and judges of Ghowr province expand their knowledge in the fields of pretrial investigation, international law, criminology, cooperation of judicial institutions, etc.
