Chief of Defence Lt. Gen. Valdas Tutkus will attend change of command ceremony of Chairman of NATO Military Committee


Lithuanian Chief of Defence Lt. Gen. Valdas Tutkus will attend ceremony of change of NATO Military Committee's Chairman, June 27-28, Brussels.


The post will be assumed by Chief of Defence Staff of Italy Adm. Giampaolo Di Paola who was elected in November 2007. He will replace Gen. Raymond Henault, Chief of Defence Staff of Canadian Armed Forces.


NATO Military Committee is the highest military authority subordinate to the North Atlantic Council and the Defence Planning Committee.


NATO Military Committee is an institution making military strategic decisions and giving consultations for the North Atlantic Council in making political decisions. Day-to-day work is done by Military Representatives meeting in Brussels. Meetings of the Military Committee at Chiefs of Defence level usually take place three times a year.


Chairman of NATO Military Committee is elected for the period of three years by Chiefs of Defence of NATO countries.


Lt. Gen. V.Tutkus will depart for Brussels from Iceland were he was on official visit at invitation of Thórir Ibsen, Director of Defence Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
