Lithuania's present for Ghowr – first public library in the province

imgOn Easter Day, March 23, the first public library in the region was opened in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghowr. Lithuania provided books and equipment for the library. The ribbon at the door of the new library established in the Department of Culture and Information HQ was cut on Sunday, when Afghans celebrate the Beginning of New School Year. Provincial Government assigned four rooms in a newly built headquarters for the library – two for reading-rooms and two for book storage.

Troops to be deployed to Afghanistan conclude ”PRT-7 Challenge" exercise

img”PRT-7 Challenge 2008" exercise held in Gen. Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre (Nemencine) was closed on March 21. The exercise scenario was designed to prepare PRT-7 soldiers to react to a diversity of situations in the mission region.

imgPRT-6 currently on Lithuanian-led mission of Ghowr reconstruction will hand over the mission to the seventh rotation of PRT. Core of PRT-7 is made up of the Grand Duchess of Lithuania Birute Motorised Infantry Battalion (Alytus) soldiers.

Two students from the Baltic Defence College Civil Servants Course come for traineeships at the National Defence Ministry

Two students, representative of Moldovan Defence Ministry Tatiana Anton and representative of Ukrainian Defence Ministry Iurii Zuvelyk, of Civil Servants Course at the Baltic Defence College (Tartu, Estonia) will come perform traineeships in the National Defence Ministry from March 17 to 20.

imgTour of Lithuanian defence attaches accredited to foreign countries will be arranged by the National Defence Ministry on March 17 – 21. The tour is intended for acquainting Lithuanian defence attaches with the policy of national security, defence and development of armed forces, perspective plans on military-political cooperation, and activity within NATO structures and forces planned by Lithuanian defence structures.

Denmark's truck with food items fall off road in Ghowr

Danish member of Ghowr PRT fell off road in bad condition driving ”Unimog" truck, March 15. The vehicle was damaged beyond repair, luckily, the soldier got away with bruises. The accident happened at daytime on a mountain road 50 kilometres away from Chaghcharan camp when Lithuanian, Croatian and Danish Lithuanian-led PRT members were transporting food for locals of Chahar Sad in a six-vehicle convoy. The pat of road was in particularly bad condition as melting snow and rain in spring cause mudslide and often wash off mountain roads.

Icelandic national flag from Ghowr PRT camp presented to Vytautas the Great War Museum

Icelandic national flag from the Lithuanian-led PRT camp in Ghowr will be presented to Vytautas the Great War Museum as this week Icelandic representative for Chaghcharan finishes her mission in the Lithuanian-led PRT. Currently Iceland was represented by provincial development advisor Ragnheidur Kolsöe. However, Iceland is not cutting its support to Ghowr: ”We move our civilian personnel to Faryab province but we will go on supporting Ghowr and continue development projects," said representative of Iceland R. Kolsöe. On the Independence Day of Lithuania, March 11, Icelandic flag was solemnly lowered after two years of service, R. Kolsöe handed it over to the PRT-6 Commander Col. Albertas Kondrotas.

Independence Day of Lithuania celebrated in Afghanistan

imgMembers of PRT-6deployed to Ghowr celebrated the Day of Lithuania's Independence Restoration on March 11. The event was attended by the Commander of Afghanistan Regional Command West Gen. Maj. Fausto Macor, NATO ISAF Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Maj. Alberto Primicerj, and delegation of Lithuanian troops on service in ISAF and Regional Command West.

Polish troops take over Baltic Air-policing mission

imgChange of military units on Baltic air policing mission ceremony will be held in Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base (Siauliai) on March 14. Royal Norwegian Air Force troops currently in charge of the mission will hand over responsibility to the Polish contingent.

Lithuanians provide medical and humanitarian aid for Afghans

imgLithuanian-led PRT-6 conducted Medical Civil Affairs Patrol in Alandar village of Ghowr on March 25. 131 patients received medical help. According to medical assistance programme conducted under the NATO International Security Assistance Force PRT-6 contingent and medics took part in operation of such type for a second time. The first time such operation was conducted in January. Medical patrol is aimed at supporting people of the most vulnerable settlements in locations with complicated communication with regional hospitals.
