New Commander of Danish Division Gen. Maj. Niels H. Bundsgaard visit Iron Wolf Brigade

Gen. Maj. Niels H. Bundsgaard, Commander of the Danish Division, visited Lithuania on February 21. Commander assigned to the post in the beginning of this year met with the Lithuanian Land Force Commander Brig. Gen. Vytautas Jonas Zukas, and visited Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf Headquarters and Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion while his stay in Vilnius.

General was accompanied by Attaché of the Kingdom of Denmark to Lithuania Navy Captain Victor Rasmussen and Head of the Danish Advisory and Training Staff (DATS) Col. Birger Meljholm.

Commander of the Danish Division Gen. Maj. Niels H. Bundsgaard met with the Iron Wolf Brigade Commander Col. Darius Uzkuraitis, and also with staff officers of the brigade and commanders of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas, Grand Duchess Birute, King Mindaugas, and General Romualdas Giedraitis battalions. The guest got acquainted with the history, structure, system of combat preparation of the Iron Wolf Brigade as well as participation of divisions in international operations.

Gen. Maj. Niels H. Bundsgaard was interested in the challenges of manning the brigade personnel, and periodicity and intensity of soldiers’ participation in international missions as well as in the military equipment and armaments used in the Battalion.

The guest also visited Algirdas Battalion. This battalion will be used as a basis for formation of Lithuanian capabilities for the 14th rotation of NATO Response Force. It is planned that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will send a joint battalion-sized component led by the Algirdas Battalion commander to NRF-14; Land component of the NRF-14 will be formed by the Danish Division.

Commander of Algirdas Battalion Maj. Remigijus Baltrenas introduced to the guest preparation plans of the battalion for standby in NRF-14.

It was the first visit of the newly appointed Danish Division Commander to Lithuania. In 2006 Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf was visited by the then Commander of the Division Gen. Maj. Knud Bartels.

According to memorandum signed in 2006 in Haderslev (Denmark) Lithuanian Armed Forces Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf was affiliated to the Danish Division. The affiliation entails rotation of officers to the Division Staff and joint exercises and training to enhance Lithuanian and Danish military units' interoperability, i.e. their ability to work jointly in international operations. Currently there are two officers serving in the Staff of the Danish Division.
