Team of Belarus Armament Control Inspection experts come to Lithuania

2008.01.28

On January 29-30 four Belarusian military experts from the Armament Control Inspection will carry out inspection at Lithuanian Armed Forces divisions as agreed by Vienna Document 1999.

According to Vienna Document 1999 each member of Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe has the right to make certain that any other member of the organisation does not pursue military activity that has to be announced in advance.

Vienna Document 1999 binds countries to give annual accounts on their military forces, plans of defence capability development and military budget, and to inform in advance about planned military activity. Members commit to accept in their territory a fixed number of inspections and visits of military experts.

This is the first visit of Belarus to Lithuania in 2008. Last year Belarus conducted one visit on the basis of Vienna Document 1999 and another on the basis of bilateral Lithuanian-Belarusian agreement on measures enhancing confidence and security. Lithuanian experts completed one inspection in Belarus last year.
