”Suduvis" return to Lithuania after excellent service in the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1

Minehunter and sweeper of the Lithuanian Navy ”Suduvis" will come back to its homeport Klaipeda on December 11. Its three-and-a-half month service in the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) was assessed as excellent. The ship is lead by Captain Lieutenant Giedrius Auksorius.

”Suduvis" officially entered Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 on 29 August 2007. ”Suduvis" started participation in the group successfully by finding two torpedoes in Lithuanian waters on the day SNMCMG1 came to Klaipeda to take part in the ”Open Spirit" mine countermeasures exercise. NATO colleges and commander of SNMCMG1 positively reviewed crew's professional performance of tasks as Lithuanians showed excellent combat preparation in foreign waters as well as at home.

This autumn ”Suduvis" visited German, Belgian, French, Scottish and Norwegian ports with SNMCMG1 and took part in mine countermeasures exercise by the coast of France and naval control exercise in fjords of Norway. SNMCMG1 and four German vessels will take part in German Navy led seaway guard exercise this week. The exercise will cover such tasks as dummy mine detection, escort of civil ships, asymmetric competition of air and above-water environment.

SNMCMG1 is one of standing NATO mine countermeasures units that can be deployed to NATO missions in any conflicting part of the world at any time. Currently the First Unit consists of five minehunters and sweepers:  ”Middleton" (UK), ”Karmoey" (Norway), ”Maassluis" (Holland), ”Datteln" (Germany) and ”Suduvis" (Lithuania). The group is commanded by a Belgian Officer Commander Serge Ots and staff located on board the Belgian provision ship ”Godetia".
