Representatives of Lithuania took part in NATO ISAF in Afghanistan change of command ceremony

imgOn June 14 commander of the Lithuanian-led PRT-5 Col. Dalius Polekauskas in Herat City of Afghanistan took part in a celebratory change of command ceremony of NATO ISAF Regional Command West. Antonio Satta who held the office for six months till present was replaced by the new commander Brigadier-General Fausto Macor. Lithuania was also represented by the head of the Special Mission to Afghanistan Birute Abraitiene and Lithuanian officers deployed in Herat.

Exploded missile damaged tent of Lithuanian soldiers in Iraq

On July 16 anticoalition forces fired a missile which exploded near the camp of Lithuanian contingent LITCON-9. The explosion damaged soldiers' tent, luckily nobody got injured. Currently the LITCON-9 soldiers live in a newly installed CAMP EINHERJER near Basra, in southeast of Iraq. Living quarters in the camp are fenced in concrete enclosure to protect soldiers from direct fire.

Soldiers of the Lithuanian Guard of Honour Coy marched the Elysian Fields

imgOn July 14 soldiers of the Guard of Honour Coy of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Grand Duke Gediminas Staff Battalion took part in the national feast of France - commemoration of the Bastille seizure in Paris. About thirty Lithuanian soldiers along with their French counterparts and soldiers from other EU countries marched down the Elysian Fields in Paris in a celebratory parade watched by thousands of Parisians and city guests.

New Hungarian Defence Attaché accredited

imgFarewell ceremony for the former Hungarian Defence Attaché for Lithuania Col. Láslo Józsa and accreditation ceremony of the new Defence Attaché Col. Lt. Emil Gál will take place at the Ministry of National Defence on July 13. The Hungarian Defence Attaché at the end of tenure will be awarded the National Defence System Medal of Merit for his personal contribution and merit in strengthening military cooperation of the countries.

Residents of Ghowr turned over dangerous explosives to the PRT deminers

imgInhabitants of one of the Ghowr province settlements turned over explosives they found to the Lithuanian-led PRT-5 deminers. Two rocket-propelled grenades PG-7, one 82 mm shell of a recoil-free cannon, five mines of an 82 mm mortar, four 30 mm shells artillery, and one 115 mm artillery shell. According to locals, the explosives were washed down from the mountains by rain.

Lithuanian Armed Forces Commander visits Greece

Lithuanian Armed Forces commander Major General Valdas Tutkus will go to Greece on an official visit on July 11-13. Maj. Gen. V.Tutkus will meet with the Greek Defence Minister Evangelos Meimarakis and Greek Armed Forces commander Adm. Panagiotis Chinofotis in Athens. Lithuanian Armed Forces commander will also be visiting the Greek Naval Base and get acquainted with Greek Naval Force Fleet.

The new Ghowr Governor thank Lithuanians for cooperation

National Defence Minister visited Lithuanian soldiers in Kosovo

imgOn June 2-3 National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas went to the Serbian province of Kosovo to meet with the Lithuanian soldiers serving in the NATO KFOR mission, and to inspect their service and living conditions. During the guard of honour J. Olekas awarded the troops with medals for participation in the NATO operation.

The 5th Baltic Military Sport Games start in Klaipeda
2007.07.03
On July 2-5 the 5th Baltic States Military Sports Games will be held at the Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Training Battalion in Klaipeda. About 200 soldiers - sport teams from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and a guest delegation from Poland - will attend the games. Vice President of Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Captain Bengt Nylander has come to Lithuania to observe the events.

MoND Undersecretary will take part in the EU Defence Policy Directors' meeting in Portugal

MoND Undersecretary for defence policy and international relations Renatas Norkus will participate in the EU Defence Policy Directors' meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 3–4. Purpose of the meeting is discussing the Portuguese EU presidency priorities in the European Security and Defence Policy development.
