Lithuanian troop mission helped responding to armed clash in a Ghowr district

imgThe Lithuanian led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) for Ghowr, Afghanistan, provided assistance in preventing an armed clash in one of the districts of Ghowr province. A conflict broke out in the Chahar Sedeh district between policemen and local people last week when the district’s leadership and police members came to the Kundah settlement to destroy poppy fields. The operation caused great discontent of the local community as poppy-cultivation is one of major income source in the poor Chahar Sedeh district. The villagers countered police actions by throwing stones at them and later they began using weapons. One person was killed and thirteen injured during the clash.

Formal homecoming ceremony for soldiers coming back from Iraq

On February 20 formal homecoming ceremony of LITCON-8 (Lithuanian Contingent) Platoon soldiers will take place in Panevezys in King Mindaugas Motorised Infantry Battalion of the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf. The soldiers are coming back from the peace support operation Iraqi Freedom pursued by the International Coalition.

MoND officials to take part in the USA and Baltic-Nordic defence undersecretaries for policy meeting in Stockholm

On February 20 delegation of the National Defence Ministry of the Republic of Lithuania headed by the Defence Ministry Undersecretary for Policy Renatas Norkus will attend the meeting of defence undersecretaries of Baltic-Nordic countries and USA in Stockholm. The NATO-EU cooperation and its perspectives is one of the key issues on the undersecretaries' meeting schedule. The officials will be discussing the possibility of the Baltic and Nordic countries contributing to the enhanced NATO and EU cooperation and information exchange on participation in international operations, crisis management, capabilities planning, and other points.

Lithuanian soldiers donated blankets for the Afghan National Police

imgOn 17 February, soldiers of the Lithuanian led Province Reconstruction Team for Ghowr (PRT 4) delivered 180 warm blankets to the underequipped county police centres and the new supplementary Ghowr police unit of the Afghan National Police.

On February 14 Department of Lithuanian Army Logistics of General Jonas Zemaitis Lithuanian War Academy is arranging seminar for enterprises who have expressed their intention of participating in the Armed Forces contest for purchasing services and equipment for maintenance and provision of the Lithuanian led Ghowr Province Reconstruction Team (PRT) camp.

Lithuanian soldiers save Afghan people trapped in mountains

imgTroops of Lithuanian led Afghanistan's Ghowr province Reconstruction Team (PRT 4) saved local people who had spent four days trapped in mountains. In the early morning of February 10 Head of Chaghcharan hospital doctor Juma Gul Yaqubi addressed the PRT 4 soldiers asking for their assistance in saving locals. Inhabitants of Chahar Sadeh region affected by disease outburst and treated by the Chaghcharan hospital medics had spent four days trapped in an impassable mountain passage connecting the Chahar Sadeh region and Chaghcharan. Inhabitants of the region in need of urgent medical aid could not reach Chaghcharan. There were 30 people trapped - a few seriously ill and a pregnant woman among them.

Lithuanian troops assist media of Afghanistan's Ghowr province to make its first steps

imgOn February 8 a professional radio station study was fit up in the province of Ghowr with assistance and support of the Lithuanian led PRT-4. Soldiers handed over a motorbike to the radio station personnel and helped them with equipping the studio professionally. Bike is the main vehicle type used in Afghanistan, it could be used for getting to the event scenes to prepare remote coverage. That would result in putting the information on air and showing it on periodical news sooner. Formerly the radio station personnel had no means of transportation.
