Spain to take over Baltic air-policing mission from Turkey

On Tuesday, 1 August a ceremony of changing of military contingents involved in the NATO's Baltic air-policing mission is scheduled to take place at the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation Base in Siauliai. The mission will be taken by Spanish personnel from Turkey. The mission take-over ceremony will be attended by Vice-Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys, Turkish Ambassador to Lithuania Kadriye Sanivar Kizildeli, Spanish Ambassador to Lithuania Fidel Lopez Alvarez, Lithuanian Chief of Defence, Major General Valdas Tutkus, air force commanders of Lithuania, Latvia, representatives from Turkish, Spanish Air Force, and other guests.

Lithuanian serviceman injured in Iraq

A serviceman of Lithuania's LITCON-7 contingent was injured in an attack on international forces in southern Iraq. The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. Lithuanian time on Tuesday, when Lithuanian servicemen escorting civilian-military cooperation specialists on the outskirts of Basra came under fire from a group of unidentified persons. One serviceman sustained a slight shoulder injury.

Lithuania ratified the treaty in December 2004. It came into effect in July 2005. The treaty is aimed at enhancing confidence and mutual understanding among parties to the agreement.
