Lithuanian naval ship „Sūduvis” to attend a mine clearance operation MCOPLAT 06

2006.05.04

On 5-18 May, the mine hunter and mine clearing ship, Sūduvis M52, of the Lithuanian naval force will be attending an international mine clearing operation MCOPLAT 06 to be held in the Baltic Sea, at the side of the coastline of Latvia.

The operation will be conducted in Latvia's territorial waters and its exclusive economic zone. The exercise, which will be largest one in its scope in Latvia this year, will be attended by 13 ships representing Estonia, Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. During the exercise approaches of the Irben Strait are expected to be surveyed.

Last year a traditional series of the MCOPLIT exercise was conducted in Lithuania's territorial waters; the training session involved 20 naval warships; 37 explosives -- mine, torpedoes etc. -- were detected and neutralised during the exercise.
