National Defence Ministry's Undersecretary attended a meeting of EU Policy Directors

On 19 January Lithuanian National Defence Ministry's Undersecretary Renatas Norkus took part in an informal meeting of EU Policy Directors in Vienna, Austria. That was the first such a type meeting after Austria took over the chairmanship of the EU from the United Kingdom in 2006. The meeting focused on the planning and development of EU armed forces, EU capabilities to implement humanitarian and military operations as well as on a long-term EU military vision.

New Commander appointed to head the Lithuanian Air Force

imgOn Friday, 20 January an official ceremony dedicated to inaugurate the new commander of the Lithuanian Air Force will be held in St. Mykolas Arkangelas (Garrison) Church in Kaunas. Colonel Artūras Leita, who before assuming the current post served as Acting Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, has been appointed the fourth Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force. The inauguration ceremony will be attended by National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus, municipal authorities of Kaunas city and country, commanders of branches of service of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, military units and other distinguished guests.

Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to attend meeting of Chiefs of Defence of the Nordic States

On Wednesday, 18 January Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Valdas Tutkus leaves for Denmark, where he will attend a meeting of Chiefs of Defence of the Nordic States. The meeting will involve Chiefs of Defence of Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden.

Lithuanian Volunteer Forces marking the 15th anniversary of foundation

imgOn Monday, 17 January the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces will mark the 15th anniversary of foundation. An official formation of flag platoons of territorial units of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces will be held in Nepriklausomybės (Independence) Square in Vilnius. The event will be attended by the Lithuanian Parliamentary Chairman Artūras Paulauskas, Parliamentary members, leadership of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and Armed Forces, defence attaches of foreign states accredited to Lithuania, commanders of Danish, Estonian and Latvian volunteer forces. On 17 January 1991 the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania passed the law on the establishment of the Voluntary National Defence Service.

Lithuanian National Defence leadership to meet with Chief of Defence of the Czech Republic

On Wednesday, 11 January Chief of Defence of the Czech Republic Lieutenant General Pavel Stefka arrives on a two-day visit to Lithuania, where he is expected to meet with Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas, Chief of Defence, Major General Valdas Tutkus. He is also scheduled to visit the General Staff of the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, Training and Doctrine Command, the General Jonas Zemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania Lithuanian Military Academy, and Logistic Command. During the meetings with the Lithuanian National Defence leadership, the Chief of Defence of the Czech Republic will be briefed on the Lithuanian Armed Forces, military structure and future reforms. The meetings will also focus on issues covering bilateral military co-operation.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces to acquire Finnish-made off-road trucks

imgThe Lithuanian Armed Forces will acquire Finnish-made 8x8 multi-axle off-road trucks SISU E11T. An agreement with Finish Company Oy Sisi Auto Ab was signed in the middle of December 2005. The deal is worth of more than 20 million euros and also includes an option for additional deliveries. The vehicle to be delivered to Lithuania will be of three modifications. Eight major European and the US manufactures of customised special trucks were invited to take part in the closed international bidding competition. In the course of the competition, Oy Sisu Auto AB proved to be the most cost-effective solution in the long term.

Danish soldiers completed their service in the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team

imgOn 31 December the second rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) held an official ceremony designed to farewell Danish servicemen who are returning home after completion of a six-month mission in the Ghor PRT. The Lithuania-led Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team involved a six Danish servicemen strong mobile communications and monitoring team and four Danish staff officers. During the ceremony the Ghor PRT-2 Commander Colonel Gintaras Ažubalis praised the outgoing Danish military personnel for their excellent execution of duties and professional skills.

National Defence Ministry's Undersecretary Rentas Norkus to attend NATO and EU meetings

On 16-18 January Lithuanian National Defence Ministry's Undersecretary Renatas Norkus is due to attend a NATO defence planning symposium in Oberammergau, Germany. The meeting will focus on key aspects of NATO defence planning policy – NATO political guidelines, defence planning future prospects and efforts made by NATO and the EU in harmonising defence planing processes. While at the symposium, R. Norkus will present Lithuania's position towards NATO transformation, future challenges and objectives and will make proposals in relation to the primary topics for NATO summit which is scheduled to take place in November later this year in Riga, Latvia.
