Upon completing a mission in Iraq, LITDET-5 returning home

imgOn Thursday, 2 February the Great Duchess Motorised Infantry Battalion will host a welcome ceremony for Lithuanian LITDET-5 (Lithuanian Detachment) unit. The Lithuanian servicemen are returning home upon completing their six-month mission in Iraq, within the Polish contingent in the Babylon Province sector near Al-Hillah. The ceremony will be attended by leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, families and friends of returning soldiers.

Director of the European Defence Agency to pay a visit to Vilnius

On Monday, 30 January the European Defence Agency (EDA) Director Nick Witney will come with a visit to Vilnius, Lithuania. During the visit, Mr. Nick Witney will meet with Lithuanian National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, Ministry's Undersecretary Renatas Norkus, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Vitalijus Vaiksnoras and heads of the ministry's departments.

Members of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania observed the Special Operations Force's exercising

On Friday, 27 January an exercise – release of hostages - of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, which was held at the Kairiai Training Area in Klaipeda, was observed by members of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. During a circuit session, the governmental members were also shortly briefed on the Special Operations Force, the unit's equipment and weaponry and had an opportunity to test their accuracy at the shooting range.

Military mine-clearing personnel successfully destroyed an aviation bomb

On Thursday, 26 January military clearing personnel from the Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion destroyed 250kg-weight aviation bomb FAB 250 at the Kairiai Training Area in Klaipeda. According to Master Sergeant Laimonas Jacenas, who was in charge of the operation, information on the explosive detected in the territory of the detected explosive in Klaipeda seaport was received in the morning. The powerful explosive was dug out by an excavator while deepening the seaport’s waterway.

Lithuanian Air Force Search Rescue Service to mark the 12th anniversary of its foundation

img24 January 1994 marks a ”birthday" of the Search and Rescue Service of the Lithuanian Air Force (LAF). On that day LAF Mi8MT-1 helicopter (sideboard No 01) successfully participated in a search and rescue operation in the Baltic Sea for the first time. On 24 January 2004 the Government of the Republic of Lithuania authorised the Ministry of National Defence to provide the Lithuanian Air Force with the primary rescue equipment required for rendering assistance to people and directed the Air Force to organise and carry out aviation search and rescue works in the event of natural calamities, air and maritime transport accidents and other emergencies. With a view to implement the resolution, on 1 March of that same year a helicopter was put on duty at the Zokniai - based First Air Base of the Lithuanian Air Force.

Accreditation of the new Swiss Defence Attaché to Lithuania

On Thursday, 26 January a ceremony relating to the accreditation of the new Swiss Defence Attaché to Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Reto P. Senn was held in the Black Hall of the Ministry of National Defence. The new Swiss DA will be based in Stockholm, Sweden. The accreditation ceremony was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and Armed Forces.

Lithuanian officers attending NATO exercise Allied Reach 2006

imgAn annual high-level NATO Exercise Allied Reach 2006 is held on 23-26 January at the Joint Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, the US. The exercise under the theme ”The NATO Response Force beyond Full Operational Capability" is attended by Lithuanian Military Representative to NATO and the EU, Brigadier General Edvardas Mazeikis, and Deputy Military Representative for Strategic Planning and Logistics, Lieutenant Colonel Antanas Jucius. The aim of Allied Reach 06 is to contribute to the enhancements of the NATO Response Force beyond Full Operational Capability, by examining transformational and operational issues with all Strategic and Operational level commanders and their key staff.

Lithuanian military officers to assist in training Iraqi soldiers

imgOn Monday, 23 January three Lithuanian military officers depart for Iraq to join the US-led Operation Iraqi Freedom there. The Lithuanian officers will serve in Iraq as part of the Military Transition Team in the Polish-controlled multinational division's area of responsibility in Al Hillah. While on a six month mission, Lithuanian officers from the Lithuanian Gen. Stasys Rastikis Non-commissioned Officers School and the Motorised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf will assist in training Iraqi soldiers and officers. During the mission, a Lithuanian liaison officer will serve within the headquarters of the 8th Division of the 3rd Brigade, while another two Lithuanian officers responsible for operations planning will take up their appointments in the 3rd Brigade's battalions.
