Change of command ceremony of reconstruction to take place in Ghor Province in Afghanistan

imgOn 29 November, in Chaghcharan, Afghanistan, a change of command ceremony of the Lithuania-led Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team was held. The second rotation of the Lithuania-led Provincial Reconstruction Team, given under command of Colonel Gintaras Azubalis, took over the command of the mission. During the official ceremony, commander of the outgoing first rotation of the Ghor Provincial Reconstruction Team, Commander Gintautas Zenkevicius, thanked the soldiers for their meritorious service.

Baltic Ministers of Defence to hold meeting in Estonia

On Tuesday, 8 November Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas leaves for Piarnu, Estonia, where he will attend a meeting of the Baltic Ministers of Defence. During the meeting, Defence Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia will talk over issues in relation to the NATO air-policing mission over the Baltic States, national involvement in international operations and joint trilateral projects.

President of the European Organisation of Military Association visiting Lithuania

On Monday, 7 November President of the European Organisation of Military Association Bauke Snoep, who is currently on a fact-finding visit to Lithuania, will visit the Ministry of National Defence, where he is scheduled to meet with the Ministry's of National Defence State Secretary Valdemaras Sarapinas. During the visit, the guest will focus on social guarantees of Lithuanian military personnel attending international operations, social welfare of Lithuanian service members, problems of female military personnel serving in the Lithuanian Armed Forces, social guarantees of reserve military officers. Later in the day, the visitor is scheduled to meet with Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Vitalijus Vaiksnoras, and representatives of the Military Medicine Service of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Meeting of Baltic Chiefs of Defence to take place in Tallinn

On 4 November Chiefs of Defence of the Baltic States – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – will hold a meeting in Tallinn, Estonia. Major General Valdas Tutkus, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, will attend the meeting. The meeting is expected to focus on issues dealing with joint military co-operation projects, the NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic States, and other most urgent issues. Trilateral meetings of Chiefs of Defence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are held twice a year. Meetings are organized within the framework of a trilateral co-operation plan.

Lithuania to start transfer procedures of interceptor SU-27 wreckage to Russia

On Wednesday, 26 October procedures of transfer of the wreckage of the Russian aircraft interceptor SU-27, which crashed on 15 September within the borders of the Republic of Lithuania, to Russian representatives started to be followed at the Kaunas-based Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion.

Lithuania and Hungary plan to make military co-operation more active

On Tuesday, 25 October, in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas and Hungarian Minister of Defence Ferenc Juhįsz, who is currently visiting Lithuania, have agreed to intensify bilateral military co-operation. During the meeting, Minister Kirkilas has invited Hungary to join the NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic States. On his turn, Minister Juhįsz informed that Hungary intends leading one of the Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT) in Afghanistan and asked Lithuanian experts to share their experience in preparing for such a type mission. The Lithuanian Minister of National Defence briefly informed of the activity of the Lithuania-led PRT in Ghor Province of Afghanistan and promised to provide consultation assistance. At the meeting issues covering the countries' participation in international operations, defence reforms and financing were also addressed by the Lithuanian and Hungarian sides.

Lithuanian and Ukrainian Ministers of Defence to discuss bilateral co-operation

On Monday, 24 October, at a bilateral meeting in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas thanked Ukrainian Minister of Defence Anatoly Grytsenko for an operative assistance rendered to Lithuania in making investigation into causes of the crash of the Russian aircraft fighter SU-27 within the borders of the Republic of Lithuania. „Your experts have contributed greatly to the success of the investigation, ”the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence said at the bilateral meeting. G. Kirkilas also briefly informed his counterpart about the course and conclusions of the investigation of the crash. The Ukrainian Minister of Defence Grytsenko thanked the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence for Lithuania's support of Ukraine's NATO aspirations and expressed his delight in well-developing Lithuanian-Ukrainian relations.

NATO reaffirmed its support to Ukraine on the country's road to the Alliance

On Monday, 24 October, at the informal high-level NATO-Ukraine Consultations, the NATO member states have reaffirmed their full support to Ukraine in implementing the necessary reforms in the security sector in the country's aspirations to NATO membership. During the meeting, it has been underlined that Ukraine had already achieved the progress and is on the right way leading to the Euroatlantic community; however, the country's further success will depend on the efforts made and intensive work done by Ukraine itself. During the Consultations, Ukrainian Minister of Defence Anatoly Grytsenko specified the underlying areas of the activity: strengthening of civilian control of the armed forces, review of the Ukrainian defence policy, reduction of the armed forces and the fight against corruption.

Vilnius to host Informal High-Level NATO-Ukraine Consultations

imgOn October 23-24 Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is to host Informal High-Level NATO-Ukraine Consultations. The event is arranged by NATO, the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of the University of Vilnius and the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. Defence Ministers of NATO member states and Ukraine, senior officials of NATO member states and Ukraine, the Alliance political and military leadership, permanent representatives of NATO member states are invited to take part in the Consultations. The Consultations will be held under the chairmanship of the NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. While implementing the gaols set forth in the Intensified Dialogue on Ukraine's aspirations to NATO, which was launched at the NATO-Ukraine Commission meeting of foreign ministers in April 2005 in Vilnius, the Consultations will address the NATO-Ukraine co-operation in the area of defence and security, the progress made by Ukraine in the area of defence reforms and security.
