Russian military aircraft crashed in the territory of Lithuania

On Thursday, 15 September, at approximately 1500 hrs (local time), a Russian military aircraft fell down and crashed in Jotyškiai village, Šakiai region, in the western part of Lithuania. According to preliminary data, the aircraft to crash was fighter aircraft Su 27.

The aircraft pilot has not been injured; he managed to catapult. The pilot was transported for inquiry to the Jurbarkas Police Station.

The Lithuanian Air Force's search and rescue helicopter has been ordered to fly in the area of the accident.

Due to uncertain reasons the aircraft swerved from its course Saint Petersburg - Kaliningrad running above neutral waters in the Baltic Sea.

Radar systems failed to record the aircraft crossing the Lithuanian airspace. According to experts, the aircraft had flown at a very low altitude. The Russian military aircraft has not been issued clearance to cross the Lithuanian airspace.

Currently, two fighter aircraft F4, which are currently attending the NATO's air-policing mission in the Baltic States, are flying above the area of the accident.
