Ministry of National Defence denies media reports on purportedly committed violation of Lithuania's airspace

2005.09.30

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has denied media reports on purportedly committed violation of Lithuania's airspace by a civilian aircraft of another state.

”No violation of the Lithuanian airspace has been reported on 12 October,” said Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian Air Force, Colonel Edmundas Adomynas.

On 12 October the US aircraft fighters patrolling in the airspace of the Baltic States were flying a scheduled operation and were charged with an additional task to conduct a reconnaissance mission in the region of Ignalina. While on the operation, the US fighters did not enter the prohibited area.

In the words of Colonel Adomynas, an indistinct mark was did recorded on radar screens on 12 October; however, no information on quasi-violation of the Lithuanian airspace was verified after additional survey measures had been applied. After having entered the area of supposed violation, the US fighters confirmed that the Lithuanian airspace of Lithuania had not been violated.
