Polish Chief of Defence to visit Lithuania

On Thursday, 28 April Chief of the Polish General Staff General Czeszlaw Piątas will come on an official two-day visit to Lithuania.

 

During the visit the Polish Chief of Defence is scheduled to meet with Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus. The meetings are expected to focus on the pending Polish Air Force air-policing mission in the Zokniai-based airbase, bilateral co-operation in international operations and issues covering establishment of the European Union's Battle Groups.

 

The Polish Chief of Defence is also scheduled to visit the Lithuanian Air Force Aviation base in Zokniai and the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Rukla.

Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force visiting Lithuanian troops serving in Kosovo

On Sunday, 24 April Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius, visited Lithuanian troops performing a mission in Serbia and Montenegro in Kosovo Province. During his visit, Brigadier General A. Pocius handed traditional Lithuanian food, newspapers and other things to the Lithuanian soldiers, went on patrols, reviewed objects which are under the area of responsibility of Lithuanian troops.

Some 130 troops from the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces currently serve in Kosovo. A 30-strong Lithuanian platoon KFOR-12 serves alongside the joint Polish-Ukrainian Battalion, POLUKRBAT, while another detachment of Lithuanian troops company BALTSQN-11 (some 100 troops) is performing a mission within the Danish Battalion in Mitrovica.

While at the POLUKRBAT campsite, Brigadier General A. Pocius met with the POLUKRBAT Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ryszard Wrobel.

Accreditation of the new Slovak Defence Attache to Lithuania

On 26 April, accreditation of the new Slovak Defence Attache to Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Macko was held at the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence in Vilnius. Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas awarded the outgoing Slovak Defence Attache Lieutenant Colonel Jan Horeličan the National Defence System level decoration -- Medal For Merits – in recognition of his outstanding contribution to strengthening bilateral co-operation between the Lithuanian and Slovak Armed Forces.

Petrol Ship Exercise Stormex 05 to take place in the Baltic Sea

On 26-29 April a bilateral exercise Stormex'05 will take place in the territorial waters of the Baltic Sea and in an exclusive economic zone. The exercise will be attended by the Lithuanian and Latvian military patrol ships.

During the exercise military personnel will improve their maritime skills and undertake performing sea control operations. The exercise tasks will also include air and sea target firing, manoeuvring within the unit, training in search and rescue operations.

 

At the exercise, the Lithuanian Naval Force will be represented by patrol ships, P-32 Sėlis, and, P-33 Skalvis. The Latvian Naval Force will be represented by the ship, P-03 Linga.

Lithuanian National Defence management met with the Danish Minister of Defence

Danish Minister of Defence Saren Gade has thanked Lithuanian military personnel serving within the composition of the Danish Battalion in Iraq. " A few weeks ago I was in that country and I would like to commend the professionalism demonstrated there by Lithuanian troops, " said Minister S. Gade during his meeting with Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas and Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus on Monday, 18 April at the Ministry of National Defence in Vilnius. On 18 April, the Danish Minister of Defence and him accompanying delegation came with a two day visit to Lithuania.

 

The Danish Minister also stated that Danish military personnel intended to stay in Iraq and to furher contribute to the development of Iraqi Security Force.

 

At the moment some 50 troops of LITCON-5 (Lithuanian Contingent) serve within the composition of the Danish Battalion in Iraq.

Lithuanian military volunteers to be presented with medals after performing mission in Kosovo

On Monday, 18 April troops of platoon KFOR-11, who have been contributed to peace operation in Serbia in Montenegro, Kosovo province, will be awarded the National Defence System's level medal "For International Operations". The ceremony will take place at the headquarters of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces. The medals will be presented by Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas.

 

During the ceremony troops of platoon KFOR –10, who completed mission in Kosovo last year, will also be presented with NATO medals "For Peacekeeping Operations".  The medals will be conferred on troops serving with the Lithuanian National Defence Forces by Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force, Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius. Traditionally, all troops who have been contributed to NATO-led operations in the Balkan Regions since 2003 are awarded this level of decoration. KFOR-11 troops have been awarded the NATO medal during the mission.

Danish Minister of Defence to pay a visit to Lithuania

Between 18-19 April Danish Minister of Defence Soren Gade and his delegation will be with an official visit to Lithuania.

The agenda for Monday, 18 April will include meetings with President Valdas Adamkus of the Republic of Lithuania, Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas and Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Valdas Tutkus.

The meeting with the Minister of National Defence is expected to address a bilateral co-operation, participation in international operations and possible Danish assistance to the Lithuania-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor province in Afghanistan. The ministers also plan to talk about NATO reform and prospects of the ongoing NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic States.

National Defence Minister to present in Brussels Lithuania's view on NATO transformation

On Wednesday, 13 April Lithuanian National Defence Minister Gediminas Kirkilas leaves for Brussels to give a report at an international conference "Transforming NATO- a Political and Military Challenge", hosted by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

 

The Minister will make a speech during a morning part of the conference, aimed to present individual countries' view on NATO transformation. National experience and view on NATO transformation will also be shared by Defence Ministers of Bulgaria and Denmark.

 

In the second part of the day the conference participants will discuss the way in which national parliaments could contribute to the transforming of the Alliance.

Foreign Defence Attaches accredited to Lithuania to hold a meeting
