Lithuanian Minister of National Defence to meet with Estonian and Latvian parliamentarians


On Wednesday, 30 March, in Vilnius, Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Gediminas Kirkilas will meet with delegations of the Estonian Parliamentary Committee on National Defence and the Latvian Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Domestic Affairs.


During the meeting with Estonian and Latvian parliamentarians the Minister will address Lithuania's participation in international operation in Afghanistan and Iraq, European security and defence policy, issues covering the NATO Response Force and crisis management.


Later in that same say the visitors will visit the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania in Vilnius, the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised Infantry Battalion in Rukla, and the Regional Air Surveillance and Coordination Centre in Karmelava.


Prior to the meeting with the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence, Estonian and Latvian parliament members will meet on 29 March with the Lithuanian Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence. This will be the first meeting at the level of the Baltic parliamentary committees of defence, conducted to strengthen trilateral interparliamentary relations among the Baltic states, assist in establishing further co-operation, discuss common problems and share experience.


During the visit to Lithuania, the delegations are also expected to meet with the Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
