Commanding General Multinational Division and General Officer Commanding British Forces Iraq expresses thanks to Lithuanian troops

2005.02.08

On 7 February, in his letter to the Commander of the Lithuanian Land Forces, Brigadier General Arvydas Pocius, the Commanding General Multinational Division (South East) Major General Joanthon Riley thanks Lithuanian troops for their assistance in providing a secure environment for free election. On 30 January, for the first time in 50 years, a free democratic election was held in Iraq.

"I must tell you that the efforts of your troops, and the officers and NCOs on my staff, were magnificent. /.../ The efforts of your contingent helped to produce that success, " reads the letter. Major General Riley distinguished the decisive personal commitments of Captain Vytautas Jakuska, serving in the Multinational Division Headquarter (South East) and 1st Lieutenant Donatas Palavenis, Commander of LITCON-4 (Lithuanian Contingent).

According to the British Commanding General, the Coalition forces were preparing for the election for months. "This was an Iraqi election and in the end, it was Iraqis who organised it and whose forces secured it. But they cold not have done it without the whole-hearted support of the Coalition," underlines the letter.

The British-led multinational Division in Iraq is currently attended by 50 Lithuanian troops.
