International exercise Baltic Spirit commencing in Lithuania



On 1-8 October the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces (KASP) and the Danish Home Guard will be conducting the BALTIC SPIRIT 2004 exercise in Lithuania. The exercise will involve 500 Lithuanian and 130 Danish troops.


The international military training will consist of two phases: on 1-3 October a command post exercise will take place at the Tactical Simulator of the General A. Ramanauskas Combat Training Centre located in Nemencine, some 50 kilometres off Vilnius, while a field exercise is scheduled on 4-8 October in Ignalina surroundings.


During the exercise, staff of the 7th Territorial Union, Vytauto Military District of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Forces will practice how to command and control bilateral military units in co-ordinating actions with neighbouring territorial units of KASP; military units will be trained in guarding and defending strategic assets. The 7th territorial unit personnel will also be resposnsible for planning and arranging logistic support of KASP units participating in the exercise. The exercise will also focus on understanding of NATO terminology and procedures.


The media will have the opportunity to visit exercise BALTIC SPIRIT on Thursday, 7 October when the exercise will host the Media Day.
