French Minister of Defence coming with an official visit to Lithuania

On Thursday, 1 July French Minister of Defence Michčle Alliot-Marie will come with an official visit to Lithuania.

The French Minister of Defence and her Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevičius will discuss outcomes of NATO Istanbul Summit, participation in international military operations, possibilities of bilateral co-operation, exchange opinions on NATO and EU co-operation in the area of security and defence.

 

The high-ranking guest will have meetings with Prime Minister, Algirdas Brazauskas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antanas Valionis, and the Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defence, Alvydas Sadeckas, and other committee members. Later in the day, the French Minister of Defence is scheduled to give a lecture at the Defence Staff of the Ministry of National Defence.

On Thursday, 1 July a change of NATO forces ceremony will be held at Zokniai Air Base when the Danish military forces will take over control of the Baltic airspace.

An official change of command ceremony to take place on Cathedral Square

On Wednesday, 30 June, at 1100hrs, the Lithuanian Armed Forces change of command ceremony will be held on Cathedral Square in Vilnius.

 

During the ceremony, the outgoing Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Jonas Kronkaitis will bid farewell to military personnel, the incoming Commander Brigadier General Valdas Tutkus will swear an oath of allegiance. Regalia of the Commander – sceptre, insignia of the Armed Forces Commander, the Lithuanian Armed Forces flag will be handed to the newly inaugurated Commander of the Lithaunian Armed Forces. Prior to this assignment, Brigadier General Valdas Tutkus served as Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force.

National Defence Minister to attend meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence

On 27 June National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius will attend a meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence, which will be held in Istanbul.

On the eve of NATO Summit Meeting of Heads of State and Government, Ministers of Defence will discuss implementation of Prague Capabilities Commitment concerning development of military forces, rapid reaction force; NATO operations are also expected to be addressed at the meeting.

Joint Lithuanian-Polish military exercise taking place in Poland

img On 15-24 June some 150 troops from the Great Duchess Birutė Motorised Infantry Battalion are taking part in a bilateral Lithuanian-Polish exercise Grunwald Wind in Poland.

The Grunwald Wind is an exercise of the joint Lithuanian–Polish Battalion, LITPOLBAT. The unit, which involves over than 400 troops of the Birutė Battalion, has been trained for participation in international peace as well as humanitarian assistance operations.

On Tuesday, 22 June National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius met with Lieutenant General John Sylvester, Chief of Staff, US European Command, who is currently visiting Lithuania.

The meeting focused on the on-going changes after the new wave of NATO enlargement, reform of armed forces, participation in international operations, further implementation of air-policing related functions in the Baltic States.

Lithuanian Land Force to be awarded the combat flag

On Friday, 18 June a formal ceremony, dedicated to present the Command of the Lithuanian Land Force with a combat flag of the Lithuanian Land Force, will take place on the square at the Ministry of National Defence.

The ceremony will be attended by the Supreme Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Acting President of the Republic of Lithuania Artūras Paulauskas, Minister of National Defence Linas Linkevičius, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Jonas Kronkaitis, Commander of the Lithuanian Land Force Brigadier General Valdas Tutkus.

Seimas approved canditure for the Commander of the Armed Forces

Brigadier General Valdas Tutkus will become Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. On Thursday, 17 June the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania unanimously, by 75 votes "in favour,"  approved candidature of Brigadier General Valdas Tutkus for the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Brigadier General Tutkus will replace in the position the outgoing Major General Jonas Kronkaitis. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, the President of the Republic appoints and dismisses, upon the approval of the Seimas, the Commander of the Armed Forces.
