Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces to visit Canada

On Tuesday, 16 March Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Jonas Kronkaitis, departs for the United States and between 18-22 March at the invitation of Lithuanian Canadian community he will be visiting Canada.


The National Board of the Lithuanian Canadian Community arranges in Hamilton and Toronto events to mark the Day of the Restoration of Lithuania's Independence (the act was signed on 11 March 1990). The Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces has been invited by the community to give a report about development of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Lithuanian military aviation to mark 85th anniversary

On 12 March the Lithuanian military aviation will be marking the 85th anniversary.

The Lithuanian Air Force is an integral part of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Currently, over than 1,000 military and non-military personnel serve in the Air Force. The mission of the Force is to survey, guard and defend the air space of Lithuania, to support the Lithuanian Land and Naval Forces, to carry out search and rescue and special operations, to airlift cargo, and transport state officials and members of the Armed Forces.

Presentation of Artillery Battalion to take place at training area in Pabradė

Danish military personnel assist the Lithuanian Brigade Iron Wolf in creating and training its artillery battalion and providing theoretical knowledge and practical experience working with the battalion weaponry that was donated by Denmark.

The Ministry of National Defence invited representatives from the Government, Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, Vilnius District Administration and Švenčionys Municipal authorities to visit the Central Training Area at Pabradė on 5 March. The Artillery project, combat training programme will be presented to the guests and problems with regard to the battalion will be discussed.

To mark Lithuanian membership in NATO Lithuanian flag will be raised in Belgium

On 15 April the Lithuanian flag will be officially raised at 1430 hrs at NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Monse, some 70 km off Brussels, in Belgium. After the ceremony a brief press conference will be arranged to the media.

National Defence Minister to attend funeral of Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski

Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Linas Linkevičius has been authorised to represent Lithuania at the funeral of Macedonian President Boris Traijkovski. The Macedonian head of state, who was killed on 26 February when his plane crashed into a mountain, will be buried on 5 March in the capital city of Skopje.

On Thursday, 4 March the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence will depart for Kosovo and visit Lithuanian soldiers who are serving on the international peace enforcement mission Joint Guardian in Katchanik near the border with Macedonia.

Lithuania has reached the final sprint on its path to NATO

On 1 March Lithuania received a letter by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, inviting Lithuania to joint the North Atlantic Treaty.


As the letter reads, all the 19 present NATO member states approved accession by Lithuania and the six other invited countries to the North Atlantic Treaty, concluded on 4 April 1949 in Washington, and deposited the Protocols confirming their acceptance at the US Department of State.


Lithuania should become the Alliance's member in the end of March or beginning of April, when all the seven new NATO member states would deposit the ratification documents.
