National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius attended National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C.



On 5 February Lithuanian National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius, who is currently in Washington D.C., attended the National Prayer Breakfast hosted by the US Congress.


On 4 February L. Linkevičius met with the US Congressman Joe Knollenberg, who is responsible for issues covering development of military infrastructure. The National Defence Minister informed the Congressman on Lithuania's possibilities to take part in joint international projects and introduced technical possibilities of Zuokniai airport.


Later in the day, the Lithuanian National Defence Minister Linas Linkevičius and Albanian Defence Minister Pandeli Majko held a meeting in Washington D.C. The meeting focused on a possibility of how to maintain closer military relationships between the two countries. Albania, a member of the Vilnius Ten Group, seeks NATO membership and is interested in Lithuania's experience in integrating into international structures.


At the meeting that was arranged under the Albanian Defence Minister's initiative, the high-ranking officials exchanged their opinions on how Lithuania's experience in seeking NATO membership could be transferred to Albania.


L. Linkevičius and P. Majko signed an agreement between Lithuania and Albania in the field of military co-operation.


The Lithuanian National Defence Minister also took part in a discussion on Euro-Atlantic Partnership at the US Centre for Strategic and International Studies. In his speech, L. Linkevičius dwelt upon how national priorities of many countries could be used for a common goal, i.e. enhancement and enlargement of security area.


In the evening of 5 February L. Linkevičius left for Germany to attend an international conference on security policy in Munich and an informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers. During the conference L. Linkevičius will take part in bilateral meetings. While in Munich, a bilateral agreement between the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the Turkish Ministry of Defence on co-operation in the area of military industry is expected to be signed.
